See guys ! I dont want ot get into an argument here but i belive it is impossible to ascertain easily the term best special forces, because special forces are meant for special purposes and sometimes for specific terrains or also depends on whether they are used in reactive (Hostage rescue, anti hijack) or preemptive situations(Recon, Sabot and Raiding). There are a variety of counterterrorist and Hostage rescue units that are more versed in combat in an urban combat CQB situation. The SAS, GIGN, GSG9 and American HRT are come of the SF units that are good at this. In a desert environment, the Australian SAS and SASR would undoubtedly be one among the best since there is nothing like training in the Aus desert outback. Few environments can be as punishing. Thats why they do better in Iraq than most other units. In the meiddle east few special forces have teh ability to blend in and engage in assymetric warfare like the israeli 'sayaret matkal'. The Iranian Quds force is also one of... Read more

In March 2006, in a bloodless operation, the SAS rescued British activist, Norman Kember, and 2 Canadians who had been kidnapped in Baghdad read more : SAS rescue Norman Kember September 5th, 2007 - A 30-man SAS team assaulted a house that intel had pinpointed as the location of a senior Al-Qaeda figure. The mission was a success but sadly it costs the life of one of the SAS assaulters. so...ever hear of SEAL'S failing their teamates like the SAS or canadians...they are good, granted, but im sick of the SEAL's not being rightfuly reconized as the best sp tf. Facts to back it up. in vietnam war seal had a 200;1 kill to loss ratio, the 1 was from either sickness or natural accidents(look it up) Fact 2: never has a seal been captured or failed a mission.

British SAS were the pioneers and mentors of modern special forces and are indisputably the best in the world, along with Australian SASR and Canadian JTF2.

The best, and deliberately so. If terrorists have one fear, it is being in the cross hairs of an SAS operative.

Urban...,jungle...,desert warfare, high level of pain tolerance, brilliant marks-men,precisional bodyguards,counter-strike advisors, military folklore, these men's lives are spook stories, the terrorists tell their children before they go to bed...the moral of the story is,what happens to daddy when he tries to take hostages at the Iranian embassy,or hi-jack a Lufthansa 747,which spells out D-E-A-T-H in english and try another sector of the world where they are not operating in the terrorist's native tongue. The level of their expertise that must be met by other units;is a level of expertise that cannot be met!

These guys are definately the best land based special force unit. Just always remember that the sbs and navy seals are water based special force units and do their operations from the water, if doing a job the cold, rough and shark tank sea is far more dangerous and diffucult obsticale and therefore one must give more credit to the amphibious special force units such as the sbs and seals. These guys are have the same pass rate in training and are equally matched so do not crack them down. The sas would prefer working with the sbs. but the sbs would prefer working with the seals as would the seals with the sbs. Brittan and USA are ally so don't break down the usa rather breake down the Iraque terrorist.

Along with the British SBS and the Australian SASR who work closely alongside, the SAS are the best special forces in the world. They possess the broadest spectrum of skills, more than any other special force in the world and it is by the sheer difficulty of their selection and training that they remain the best in the world, even at particular areas that some of the world's special forces specialise in. It must be pointed out that once the SAS was streets ahead in the world and now world special forces are closing the gap. Is this anything to do with the SAS having at some point been on training missions with most of the world's SF?

It is now widely accepted that the SAS sister special force the SBS are regarded higher than the SAS by the the british goverment and army but just do not recieve anywhere near the same amount off press coverage as the SAS

The y produced the whole small group of highly trained individuals concept with David Stirling's tactical genius in the second world war. They were the best then and remain so today with most special forces in the world having been in some way trained by them. The SBS must also be given credit as they have the same selection process and therefore are equally tough despite recent newspaper articles criticising their on land patrolling ability in Iraq.

best special forces unit in the world. There not a single special forces unit that doesn't have somrthing to do with the sas, there is also not a unit that has its history. The best.

never any doubt about it, along with the sbs who actually go through the same training and selection process. there are many great special forces in the world but the sas are definatley the best. thats why they are asked by so many countries to do dangerous missions including the US who are unable to do them.

There is not much that hasn't been said about this great force. All I can add is that the world should thank this SF unit for creating the counter-terrorism units we have today. These men and their organization are the pioneers of the special forces world. But also when you remember these men, remember the Devil's Brigade. Also on of the most elite forces ever to grace God's green earth. (3RCR)

The fact is that there is little to choose between the special forces of nato nations. They are each the best of the best in their own countries. The british sas and royal marines speacial boat service and other british special forces like the mountain and arctic warfare cadre R.M. and 148 meiktila battery 29 commando regiment RA, 14 indipendent intelligence company, force reconnaissance unit, are all special forces trained in the uk but lsser known than the sas. It is understandable that people like to think that their special forces are better than anyone elses, but the truth is they are all comparable. The British do have the edge in terms of combat experience. Their army as been on active service every single year since 1660 except for 1968.

I think there very skilled on counter terrorism. they have influenced one of the best, Delta Force but what people forget is that they did not Train Navy Seals or frogmen or from long ago underground demo team. I must disagree that they are the best in the world certanily the second or third. but first are Navy seals because of there diversity. my brother has fought side-by side with the SAS. They have been used more for reconisance. Navy seals have more training and more phases to acquire then the SAS.they have become the best in the world. seal team six was made before delta force. Whoo yah!! (Brother to a NAVY SEAL)

I THINK ITS FUNNY WHEN THE YANKS SAY THEY HAVE THE BEST SPECIAL SERVICES. DURING VIETNAM US SPECIAL SERVICES TRIED 2000 SAR LOOKING FOR POWS AND FAILD EVERYONE.THATS FACTS.YOU MAY HAVE THE WEAPONS BUT WE HAVE KNOWLEDGE.ANOTHER FACT OUR SAS DONT LIKE WORKING WITH US SPECIALS BECAUSE THEIR SUCCESS RATE IS VERY LOW. IN CLOSING BRITS SAS THESE MEN ARE UNIQUE THE THINGS THEY HAVE TO GO THROUGH TO PASS IS SO HARD AND TOUGH THEY ARE SPECIAL PEOPLE.THEY HAVE MY UPMOST RESPECT. DAVE

The British SAS was founded first, invented the concepts and tactics of Close Quarter Battle and have taught most other units in the World. They are the best because they are not just trained for one particular thing, but have the same skills as divisions such as the Royal Marines, SBS, Delta Force and The Pathfinders all in one, creating soldiers that are the most professional and highly trained in the World. And stop this crap about the Australian SASR being close behind- you ask any Australian SASR if he would rather be in the British version and the answer would be the same everytime...YES! Thats why so many of the buggers are in the Regiment!

These guys are without doubt the best special forces in the world. Although, news on the grapevine is that the Australian SASR are bridging that gap, the 22 SAS still prove to be better- although, not by much. Read the right materiel i.e. most academic stuff dealing with the topic from experts in this particular field, and the 22 SAS do come out on top. The Aussie's are tough, indeed. Unfortunately (or fortunately for us Brits), the Australians have a smaller unit trained to a lesser extent than the one we have. As a result, although the SASR are fantastic at their jobs, they are still only a replica of the original and best. Go SBS by the way! (As in Royal Marines, 99.99% need not apply). Laters!

Not listed but more elite and more secretive is the Special Boat Squadron. They have to go through a harder selection process and have more training than the SAS.
