I joined Boom last year, a few months in, I found out that I would be moving to the UK for an unknown amount of time for work. I called to cancel my membership, was told that it has to be cancelled through ABC Financial, I called them and they are completely incompetent. Come to find out months later that Boom has SOLD my information (despite my doing the right thing to cancel) to a FRAUDULENT agency that calls my former job 10 times a day, calls my US cell phone a number of times a day. I went to straighten this out with Boom and they were absolutely no help whatsoever. So now I'm involving a lawyer and have contacted the BBB, and the FCC. Its a pain in the a$$ to say the absolute least. Do NOT join there!!! Sucks that I HAVE to give at least a star on this site to these scammers at Boom - ugh.

I was a member of this gym for three years. When I moved and tried to cancel my membership they made it impossible. You can't cancel the membership over the phone or at the gym. They have no problem taking your money at the gym or over the phone. I had to write a letter requesting my gym membership canceled by certified mail. I was told that it takes 30 days to process the cancelation after they recieve the letter so that leads to another monthly payment no matter what. The gym itself is not very good, small and crowded. they will also relentlessly call you for training sessions even though you tell them you don't want it and never will need a training session. DO NOT JOIN THIS GYM UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE

I recently moved and tried to cancel my membership. It took phone call after phone call to get it taken care of and I lost money in the long run despite the fact that I had all of the things I needed and gave 30 days notice. The managers (specifically Chris) are rude and the least helpful of anyone I've ever dealt with. Chris asked me if I had nothing better to do than to call him and complain after two months of trying to get my membership cancelled. Every time I spoke to someone they told me something different. Eventually, when I got angry he told me to shut up, hung up on me several times and then threatened me with a law suit after I said I was going to write a bad review!! All they care about is that you keep spending your money and they make it impossible to get out of your contract. I've had several friends leave the gym as well. It was not what it seemed when we first signed up. The gym is small, overcrowded, and you have to wait for machines and can't get room in classes. ... Read more

I've been a member since 2003 when it was still Synergy. I signed up for yearly contracts from day one, and remain on one to this day. A friend signed up for a year with me, and didn't have too much trouble canceling that after the full year. Another friend, about 2 years ago, tried to get out of her 1 year contract about 2 months in, and had a hell of a time with it. Me, I found their regular calls about deals to my phone, only use a cell, during the middle of hte day annoying. It "only" took 5 requests and a threat to not renew my contract to get them to respond by taking me off the stupid list of people to make automated calls to. Considering the extreme turnover with the staff, I'm not surprised about the rudeness and pushyness. I used a trainer once, nice guy named Trent, who was fired after not getting enough people to higher him. The staff is very pushy about getting you to pay for training sessions; something I don't have much interest in. Still, I have been there f... Read more

I like Boom because it is convenient to the subway, medium size and personal. It has clean locker rooms, floors and equipment. Looking around there is lots of diversity in their members: Culture, white/blue/no collar, sexual-orientation, racial, etc... I agree it's only "high-lights" are cardio (elliptical and treadmill - with TVs ), but if you want strength training - there are more than enough Trainers to suit your needs. Rarely do you wait more than 2-5 minutes for a cardio machine or weight machine even during prime time 5-8pm.

Just don't. It's a joke, they're completely unprofessional (trainers complain about their jobs while they're training....that is, if they keep their appointments at all), and they keep charging you after you cancel your membership. It's relatively cheap, which is fine, but if you're looking for anything other than an exercise bike and/or elliptical machine, go elsewhere.

I was a member for a little over 2 years and had to quit because I moved downtown. Which is explanatory enough to say it's a nice gym, but not worth traveling to get to. I used both locations for a while and the one on Park Ave is much better than the Upper East Side one. It is overall cleaner and better kept. I've never used a trainer, but I've taken some classes and the instructors really care and know what they are doing. The steam room, in both gyms, have not worked in the few years that I've been there. Membership is difficult to get out of, but doable. It's a pretty friendly, upbeat place and there are usually pretty girls around. The biggest con is the hours. Although they are open early, they close really early on weekends which is a bummer. My new gym is a 24/7 place which I think will fit me more.

Make sure to turn in your keypass when you cancel your membership. I mailed a letter, spoke to the manager and nobody notified me that my membership would not technically be canceled until I turned that in. Only 6mos later did I find this out when I received a bill from a collections agency. watch out!

I recently cancelled my membership for this club and the staff was very helpful. I hated to leave but I moved too far away and it was no longer convenient. The management helped me cancel my membership while i was still under contract, they did everything they could, which was appreciated. If I moved back to the area then I would definately join there again.

I just moved to the murray hill area which seems to be loaded with gyms. I stumbled upon boom when a flyer guy said something about an open house. I was pleasantly surprised when i walked upstairs. Its an open area with good equipment. it was clean and the employees seemed nice I actually was introduced to several trainers while i was being shown the gym. Needless to say, nice clean place with a friendly atmosphere and the most affordable place on park ave in the 30's.

Well, I suppose it's my fault because I relied on the conversation with the club manager for my understanding of the agreement. I thought I was signing up for a month-to-month gym membership. I've been going for over 2 months. After reading some reviews on Citysearch I called to just to double check. It's a yearly agreement.... They were nice enough to say that in order to terminate the contract early I could pay a $149.00 termination fee. That's actually not that bad. I just feel bad now that I may have been mis-led. It's obviously happened with more than a few "members". The gym is in good shape and I may stay for the whole year. Somehow I wont enjoy it as much......

It does not take Stephen Hawkins to read between the "superb review lines" ,they are just too crafty and perfect and well anyone from the club could have posted them and most likely did. I was told to sign a pin pad with my contract without being asked to read it. When I asked what I was to sign Shawn the manager said "your Contract". How many pages is the contract I asked "oh just one or two" he said. I asked him to email it to me. He did. It is a lengthy document with many details he tried to hide. He was unethical, and out right lied about the terms of. (I must say I do not think he knows what truth is so I give him that) The sauna has yet to be fixed after being told in November that it was going to be ready in a week or two. It is now July 08. The floor matting is warped and an accident waiting to happen. They have a creepy energy and I do not like to be in that atmosphere. They are deceptive and just about taking your bucks! My advice: STAY AWAY You can join a city gym for $75.... Read more

I think this is a good gym and reasonably prices. Good equipment, good trainers, good classes and overall a nice atmosphere. I've been a member for 4 years and really have no complaints.

I have been a member of Boom Fitness since 2005 and have recently been notified that I am being transfered to Atlanta. The cancellation process was easier than I thought it would be...All I had to do was mail a letter to the customers service center. About two months before my bosses gave me the news I had begun training 2 times a week with one of their great trainers. I always enjoy my sessions and have seen results!! On a whole the staff is lovely and the facilities are very well maintained. Oh also I love the Monday night Yoga class with Rachel! I hope that I will be able to find a gym like Boom in The A.T.L.

Trying to cancel this membership has taken me four months - all of which I have been charged for, despite having never set foot in the gym since I initially sent a certified letter last year (which they "lost"). The people at member services are surly and unhelpful and I'm still trying to get this sorted out. The gym itself is fine, but please - read all the reviews of people who are having trouble canceling!! It's not worth it; any money I thought I was saving by going here has been sucked up by the last few months, and I'm getting just as much excercise running to and from the post office to keep sending all these certified letters. SO not worth it.

When you sign up they take the signature from your credit card and plug it into a year-long contract without telling you. If you try to end your membership early they refuse and keep charging you saying you are under 'contract'. I never saw a contract and certainly never signed one. They commit electronic forgery and fraud! I have filed a complaint because Boom has refused to get back to me. I am still waiting to see if this can be resolved. In short, they are CROOKS! Stay away from this gym!

I've been a member since before the renovations. I initially joined because of the low rate. Since the renovations however, the gym looks great and the price really hasn't substantially increased. Staff is very nice and friendly. The members are also very friendly, but no one will bother you if you just want to keep to yourself. Gym is very clean (someone always seems to be cleaning when I am there) and even during peak times you can get on a machine or use the weights pretty quickly. Personal training session rates are very reasonable overall and the classes are also good. I also think my trainer (Shawn Lindo) is great.

This is a great find.. I was a NYSC member for a few years and decided to stop by Boom when my membership was expiring. Boy am I glad that I did. The staff is ultra-friendly, the salespeople were low/no pressure.. and the club is absolutely gorgeous. I never realized how much nicer it is to work out with natural lighting. NYSC are always so dark and dingy with the equipment stacked on top of each other. This place is well lit, they play great music, and the classes are excellent. My only negative feedback is that the sauna is not working. There is an ominous "Closed by the Health Inspector" or something on it. Other than that, the locker room is spotless, the showers are great, and there is plenty of closet/locker space if you wear a suit everyday (like I do). Lastly, I am paying LESS money than I was at NYSC to be content, but not happy. If you are thinking about changing from NYSC and the location works for you, this place is DEFINITELY worth checking out!

In short, Boom Fitness has inspired me to more thoroughly research consumer protection laws in new york state. Avoid this gym at all costs unless you would like to be charged for a gym membership into which you never entered a binding contract.

Don't believe the reviews. The facilities are fine but not on par with 90% of NYSC locations, the classes are only decent, and the price isn't much better. They pressured my girlfriend into buying a batch of 10 training sessions and actually offered to use my credit card to pay for them when I wasn't there. Then, when we tried to cancel, we were told we had signed 1-year contracts which we hadn't. We had signed up for month-to-month. Then they produced contracts with the same signature repeated over and over--my signature from the credit card payment. I pointed this out and they promised to cancel my account, but didn't, and after months of intimidating and hostile phone conversations I finally had to go to Visa to stop payment. They're crooks, plain and simple. Stick to NYSC.

I WAS A MEMBER OF BOOM FOR A VERY LONG TIME...BY FAR THEY HAVE THE CLEANEST EQUIPMENT, BEST TRAINERS, GREATEST DEALS, NICEST STAFF AND CLEANEST LOCKER ROOM. UNLIKE MANY MANHATTAN GYMS IT IS NOT FULL OF MEATHEADS TRYING TO PICK UP CHICKS, EVERYONE MINDS THEIR OWN OR IS VERY FRIENDLY IN A NON-THREATHENING WAY. I LOVE IT THERE!

Overall, this place is pretty good. The staff is great, everyone is friendly and helpful (especially Sean the manager and James the caretaker) and trainers are awesome. Along with Personal Training you can get a variety of classes (I highly recommend Shawn Lindo's abs class - the guy is great!). The place has been renovated recently (paint jobs, floors, equipment, etc.) and I think they did a good job. It's never over crowded and you can always get a machine without having to wait like crazy. If you decide to give this place a shot, when you get there ask for Sean to give you a tour.

I've been a member for several years but recently had to terminate my membership. I tried to do this in person at the club, but was referred to a toll free member services number (in Houston TX). The person there said I had to send a certified letter -for my own protection. I did this but was still charged in the next billing - with late charges!!!!. I'm still trying to resolve this.

I'm a member, have been since January 06, and certain things are great...like the managers and the classes, the light, the location, the price, and even the members. Everyone is always smiling, the place isn't packed, and it's always clean. The one thing that upsets me is that they arte slow to make things happen...the juice bar looks like it is ready to go, as does the steam room...what gives?

I have worked in the murray hill area for several years and have worked out in every gym in the the area. Boom is great and everyone that workes there is very nice, management, trainers and front desk staff. The atmosphere is great its very friendly and all the equipment is new. The tv's on the cardio equipment are great you can really zone out. The rates are great too. I can't believe its like 60 per month. I think the word is getting out there have been some more people there during the rush hour but still no real long waits on the machines.

This club fits my needs perfectly, it's beautifully designed, it has all brand new equipment, great classes (especially yoga and pilates) and helpful personal trainers. The locker rooms are really clean. The thing I like most about it is the friendly staff. It's great to go to a club where they actually know your name.

The place has been completely remodeled and its beautiful. By far the best gym in murray hill with a nice facility and cheap rates. Even when the gym is crowded i get a machine quickly. They always seem to have a fun class to do too like boot camp or urban rebounding on the trampoline. Just an overall nice gym with a pleasant atmosphere. They have a member service that is always pleasent and helped me when i had lost my cc and had a balance. They were super nice!

Boom has taken over an old dilapidated Synergy and petty much gutted it. I was at the NYSC across the street for over 2 years, and when I saw the new signage in-front I thought I would check it out. Short story long...the place is perfect. No gimmicks, all the best equipment, extremely clean, cardio theatre, good classes, and a friendly staff. I can't wait till the spa and juice bar open!
