I've been a member for 2 years out of college and it works for me. I hop on the treadmill or elliptical or sometimes take the Urban Rebounding or Spinning classes. The whole place is super clean too which is a big change from some other places I checked out. It came down to price and Boom has the best value. I was happy with the other things that came with it. The staff is really nice and will help you out if you ask for it. I dunno just go there and see for yourself.

Do not join this gym. I have never been motivated to write an online review but the business practices of this gym border on illegal and highly unethical. They do everything in their power to keep you from leaving and make it painful process. I am still waiting for them to send a copy of the original agreement which I requested months ago. Not to mention that the suana and steamroom smells like rotten fish and the gym equipment is ratty.

Don't join this gym or you'll never be able to cancel. I've joined over the summer. Right in the hot months. Right after my first workout I noticed the towels smelled like sweat, kinda like they weren't washed. At first I thought they got mixed. I gave it another shot over and over, finally after four filthy, gross shower and towel experience I decided to not go. Must mention I did note this to the staff but it fell on deaf ears, looks like. Than I moved to NJ, bought a house. It became impossible to work out there w/o the basic hygiene requirements. I won't commute twice, pay gas, toll and parking twice and still fit in a workout in my lunch break. I've been trying to cancel for months now, been instructed to send documents over and over. I was told I could cancel since I moved out of NY, but recently I received an email that I'm not that far in NJ?!?! Should I fly to work? I guess. The meantime they keep trying to bill my credit card, of course I'm not allowing that. The latest sugge... Read more

I recently moved to Manhattan and joined Boom in May because it was close to my apartment. I made it very clear that I needed to be month to month for a number of reasons. They agreed. They promised to send me a contract in the mail which never happened. I am a volunteer with NYC Service surviving on very meager means. When I was placed with a nonprofit where exercise facilities were available, I called Boom in June to cancel. After a big run around, they finanlly cancelled my membership and "fired" my sales associate. Apparently I wasn't the only one he lied to then doctored the contract. I asked them to send me a confirmation. They agreed. I never recieved it. Well, here it is September and I was just charged the monthly fee after two months of no charges. Again after a big run around, they said they have a contract and there is nothing I can do about it. I am "obligated" to keep paying them $69.00 per month for the next 9 months whether I like it or not. If I try to change my bank a... Read more

I just joined Boom last month. I have been a training customer at Equinox, NYSC and a few other clubs all over NYC. My trainer at Boom is the best trainer I've had yet. To date I've lost 8 lbs. 3 inches and I'm down to 14% body fat. He has consistently motivated me and keeps changing the workouts so I'm never bored. The club is super clean and the managers and receptionists are very friendly.

I've been a member of Boom Fitness for two years and I have to say the ladies locker room is nicer than any of the locker rooms on the Upper East Side. It has a gorgeous interior with a beautiful white marble steam room that is immaculate, a great place to unwind after a workout. This is a must see!!!

Boom surprised me by being well designed, well equipped and well run. The friendliness is welcomed for someone who came from another club that was much colder and less welcoming. The Pilates Mat class is awesome. I'm paying much less than $70 and about 40% less than my old gym.

I am a former employee of a NYC Health Club Chain. For my former companies sales staff, Boom was difficult to compete with, the salespeople at my previous job would go on this site and trash Boom because they knew that when you compared the two clubs side by side Boom was less expensive, had the same quality equipment , was cleaner and the staff was friendlier. The were basically afraid of the competition, so they did what they could to trash Boom's reputation. But don't go by my opinion, see for yourself. Since I left the Fitness Business I am currently a personal training client at Boom and the quality of the training is excellent, the club is immaculate. the ladies locker room is excellent, the steam room is gorgeous. Again, check it out and see for yourself!!

I am sorry to say, I was transfered and need to relocate and I have to cancel my Boom Membership. It was a simple 1-2-3 process and I got a free 2 week guest pass for when I come into the city to visit my family and friends. I can't say enough how great Chris the general manager was during my 4 year tenure. He kept the place clean, the receptionists knew my name and took the time to talk to me everytime I came in to workout. Before Boom, I was a member of a large chain and the place was kept poorly, the front desk employees were self involved and indifferent to my needs as a customer. Boom is not. In the 4 years I was a member, I saved $1600 versus the cost of my former gym and didn't miss a thing. Don't by into the hype of these chains, keep it real! check out Boom.

You guys do know that some health clubs actually have their employees go on sites like these and trash their competitors, it's so obvious. This club has been great for me, it's less expensive than any gym in the area, it's always clean, never over crowded. But the best thing about it is the staff. Chris and Jason are great managers, they are friendly and genuinely care about my experience. At one point I relocated due to work and had to cancel, it was no hassle and the cancellation policy was much easier than another NY Health Club I was a memeber at.

ok, I'll admit I'm a fan. I've been a member for 5 years and I've found the club to be exceptionally clean and 40% less expensive than my old gym, while they have some things they need to work on, it suits me fine. From what I see, here's the deal, Boom sells two types of memberships, one is a 12 month committment with little or no joining fee, the other is a month by month membership that you can cancel whenever you want, but it has like a $150 joining fee. Almost all of these neg. reviews seem to be people who bought the non-cancellable membership for little or no down but then want to break their agreement and get sour that they can't have their cake and eat it too. I paid extra just in case I needed to cancel, but at the point of sale my options were clear. If you are an adult and are fair minded rather than blast this pretty good club, you should accept the deal you chose. Writing negative reports because you messed up is only going to eliminate inexpensive fitness options an... Read more

Do not join this gym. It's rather small but i thought it was ok for the money. Unfortunately I was lied too. They had told me it was $59.99/mo and at intiation when i was paying $119.99 it was for 2 months as my contract stated. Along with this I was told I would be given a free month so my first payment wouldnt be for another 3 months. Naturally 20 days later I get billed for $59.99 and then they said that the $119.99 included an initiation fee but someone from billing would call me to clear it up. its been over a month and 5 phone calls to them and naturally no response. i would pay the extra money since they are now offering 69.99/mo and join NYSC or any other gym for that matter.

Do not make the same mistake I did. Do not sign up with this gym, they are just horrible. They do not give you the proper explanation about the cancelation policy and you will never cancel your contract, even though you move away and provide all the documents required. Customer service is awful, rude and not professional at all. The only think they are looking for is your credit card number. Just do not join this horrible gym, look for a serious place.

Unfortunately I didn’t read the reviews about Boom Fitness before I signed up for this trap. I’m moving away from NYC and I have been trying to cancel my contract for more than 30 days, it’s just impossible to do it. The managers at the gym just refuse to do anything and tell you to call the Member Service. The Boom Member Service are extremely rude, they never returned my calls and just keep denying the documents I have been sending, even though I’m sending the documents they requested. It has been a total nightmare. I’m seriously thinking about taking legal actions against these crooks. Avoid a future nightmare and choose another gym!!!!!!!!!

Having been a disappointed NYSC member, it was great to find Boom Fitness. The gym is very "non agressive" - no the frat house crew normally found at NYSC. Equipment is not state of the art but VERY well maintained. Rarely is anything broken. Lockers very well maintained. Super clean. Chris, the manager, is outstanding and makes sure that everything is up to his exacting standards. This is a great place. I think most of the negative reviews come from people who signed up for a year and then try to break their contracts. Cant imagine why anyone would pan this place unless they have a grudge. Highly recommend.

They are horrendous. We have been members for two years and my husband has tried to quit - he had to mail a certified letter to their headquarters in TEXAS in order to cancel the membership. Apparently they didn't receive the mailed letter for over a month - who knew the USPS was so slow...LIARS! Anyway, now they are charging us for another month since they claim that it hasn't been another month since they received the letter and it takes that long to process. This is just something out of another decade. When I left Equinox, it was so simple and they are a massive national chain...I think it might be worth the money to go back. Forget the fact that the equipment remains less than perfectly working for months and they don't have great TV channels. AWFUL.

Gym is okay. I've worked out in better places. Beats NYSC by far. Gay General manager treats employees like dooky. I signed up with the GM and he just sat in is chair leaning back with his hands behind his head. He thinks he's the coolest gay on the earth. Jason is a good asst. manager. Owner thinks he's in the mob. F-ing joke on the management side. If jason was the GM he would do great things. I found that the mens locker room is filled with silly men (if you know what I mean) that try to look at you in the shower. The staff is cool and reliable. The guys at the counter are buff and cute dudes.

I called a few gyms when moving to my new apartment on the UES. I knew i would not be staying in the apartment long, so i looked for a gym with a month to month payment program. When I called Boom the guy on the phone (Jason a "sales manager") said that they were offering a month to month program for 59.99. I went to the gym that evening and had a tour. It was small, but ok for what I needed. A couple months into my membership i hated going, because the gym was ALWAYS packed. If you like Cardo.. no chance of getting on the tredmill unless you go after 9pm. Even early in the mornings (6am) the cardo is full! This is because they over sell memberships to the gym and it is too tiny for all the members. Also they offer classes at the worst times! if you work 9-5 there is no chance you can make a 5pm class and even a 6pm class because you have to sign up a hour before the class!!!! Then they offer no classes late at night or early in the morning. The worst is when I found an apartment ... Read more

My husband and I have recently had to cancel our membership at Boom after only 6 months due to our unexpected move out of NY. We had initially chosen Boom for two reasons: they were in our neighborhood and they had a cancellation policy that allowed us to cancel our membership if we moved further than 25 miles away ? we are not originally from NY so this was very important for us in case things did not turn out the way we expected them to-. In fact, we were surprised in a very pleasant manner by the way our case was taken care of and I really want to insist on the excellent service we were provided with. The cancellation of both our memberships was approved rather quickly after we provided all the documents requested as proof of our new residence. Boom Fitness took the time to understand and appreciate our personal situation. The gym is fine - though it is a rather unfriendly atmosphere and extremely warm during the summer month. Staff turn-over is high because the owners withhold checks or pay staff late. Odd - considering I have been trying to quit the gym for two months and despite doing everything the contract says (send letter to the club registered/return receipt requested) and three calls to the membership office, they have debitted my checking account twice since I sent my letter to cancel my membership. So, be careful.

When I joined Boom I told them outright, I am moving for graduate school, and do not want a hassle canceling my membership in 6mo. They told me it would be no problem. It couldn't be further from the truth! First, the business card they gave me had the WRONG fax number on it (yes you have to fax you cancellation to TEXAS, since that where 'membership' is...) I did this BEFORE the 15th of the month, so that I would not be charged for the next month. Of course the fax did not go through, so I went back to Boom and demanded that they fax it. Chris the manager is horrible person to deal with. He didn't apologize for GIVING OUT business cards WITH THE WRONG FAX, then he grudgingly faxed my papers to the TX office. They FORWARD dated my papers to AFTER the 15th (to charge me an additional month), and then REJECTED my cancellation! I have been struggling to cancel my membership now for three months, even though I'm 2 states away. BOOM FITNESS IS A TERRIBLE GYM TO JOIN, IT'S BEEN A HO... Read more

If your considering joining a gym check out Boom Fitness. The gym has all of the same ammenities as equinox and is much cheaper. The equipment is all new, the facility is always clean, and from my experiences the staff has always been pleasent and very helpful. This club goes further than most, one example is that they have an outside company come in to clean and inspect all of the equipment. I feel better knowing that they care about the members safety on the equipment. Anytime a piece breaks it is repaired extremely fast, which makes it easy to find a piece of equipment during peek hours. Boom fitness gets an A+

The single best reason not to join Boom Fitness is that ending your membership is a real hassle, simply because, I think, that makes it easier to squeeze a few more bucks from you. The gym itself is basically fine, although looking back on it the weight room was often freezing cold in the winter, and I was surprised last year when my membership fees were increased without warning. As another reviewer mentioned, member services is outsourced to a company in Texas. You have to send a certified letter to Texas giving 30 days notice before they'll cancel the bill, "like a legal document," I was told. I was told that if I got it in quickly enough I could avoid getting billed for TWO months, instead of just one, and after reading other reviews, here's hoping it doesn't go any longer than that. Given that I was ending my membership because of a move on short-notice, I found it particularly frustrating that not only was ending my membership a "legal" matter, but I couldn't talk to anyone ... Slick looking interior, satisfactory equipment, maintained poorly. The real problem comes when you try to cancel your membership, when you are told that you must send a certified letter to Texas. Then your credit card will continue to be charged, as you waste countless hours trying to get them to stop billing you. If you are a member, I suggest starting quitting process at least two months before the end of your year, and keeping all copies of the certified mail. Ask your credit card company to stop payment at least a month before the last payment should be made. Check your credit rating if you ever manage to complete the process. Quitting smoking is probably easier.

Chris the manager is a nightmare; on more than one occasion I overheard other members complaining about this beast--he is gross, mean and I don't believe he showers often. There is an inconsistent treatment of members (their offers seem to change on a minute by minute basis; one person will receive an offer only to have the same offer declined to the next client minutes later) Staff have no energy; completely lifeless and some may even be considered a little "slow";. Cardio equipment has TV's with few decent channels to choose from; I have never seen so many boring channels at a gym...NO MTV??? NO Cable channels; you should feel privileged to get CNN and VH1 but for any other channel beside basic TV forget it! This place is NOT worth the effort; or the money-- go somewhere else; I cannot wait for my membership to expire. I cringe just by walking through their front door everyday. Well unfortunately i can't tell you what the Gym's like or how its services are because i never was able to enter. Apparently, unless you give them a personal profile you get NO information about the gym. The guy at the desk wouldn't answer one question. I know nothing about this gym because i wouldn't give them my name or address before learning a little bit about what they offer. I wasn't even asking about cost. In this age of identity theft...ridiculous! Do you have personal trainers? No answer. Are there classes held here? No answer. My wife has belonged to several clubs in the area, all of which she had major problems with....overcrowding, crummy equipment, lousy service, etc. So when I went out searching for a club, my expectations weren't very high. However, I found Boom, it was the old Synergy, over on East 81st Street. I had been in the club once when it was Synergy, and wasn't impressed. But now that it was converted to Boom (I understand they operate other health cubs in the city), I found it amazing. The facilities are luxurious, the bathrooms are nicer than our own at home,, there are plenty of weights and equipment--all new stuff, and the staff is knowledgable and helpful. I had visited Equinox but was put off by the high price. When I went to Boom, I expected it to cost around the same, but when they quoted me the monthly rate, it was, i believe, around 30% less, and the club was every bit as nice. I was a member for 6 years and moved out of the area so had to cancel. I sent them written and voice cancellations, but still they insisted on billing me until I sent certified mail (which is buried in fine print of their contract). I stopped payment to them but still they kept billing me until I finally got around to going to the post office (never a fun task). I refused to pay the two months between when I cancelled and finally sent certified mail, and so they sent me to a collections agency that has been harassing me on nights and weekends ever since. With help I got them to drop the collections effort, but now a year later they have started harassing me again. I have never had such a bad customer service experience in my life and never seen any firm treat a long time client in such a manor. I would urge everyone to avoid this chain.

The gym is really nice and clean and the staff is very friendly as others can relate to. However if you try to cancel your membership beware. I was told I could cancel my membership at any time as long as I gave a month's notice. I tried to cancel and was told I had to wait a year in order to do so. That information was not given to me by the salesperson who eagerly signed me up. Now the gym avoids my phonecalls and membership services can't even find my contract to give me a copy of. That's because there is no contract!! Make sure you ask for a copy of a contract if you sign up for this gym and get your facts in writing. DON'T TRUST ANYONE, especially a salesperson. Unfortunately I learned the hard way.

Initially, I was pleased with the hospitality and friendliness of the staff (which I was not happy with at many other facilities). I would not recommend spending any money to this pathetic excuse for a gym. Spend a little more, and get a lot more at other gyms in the city. The staff is rude and the facilities are second tier. Don't let them sucker you in! It's also impossible to quit once you sign on.
