It's my understanding that Alannah Myles was insufferable back in the day (though she was hot), but that doesn't negate the fact (at least my opinion) that "Black Velvet" is good if not great single. The pounding baseline has a blues feel punctuated by a classic rock meets new county guitar, and this along with Myles' more than passable vocals all come together in a song that had crossover appeal that still lasts today. Myles followed-up with the forgettable "Love Is", tainting what should have been a near perfect one hit wonder; but not before "Black Velvet" charted in the States for 15 weeks in 1990 (#1).
