He was actually sewed by another musician for taking back round music from another song and puttin in this so copy right much. Its a good song if you have 5 min to listen to a boring song. Don't get me wrong i like the song but its just has no replay value to me.

Its the kinda song that gets stuck in your head and it also had a very different sound at the time. I liked it because it was in Cruel Intentions too and it played during a very awesome part in the movie.

I use to love this one,in the late 90's they played it to death on the radio, but the verve was/is a good band.I especially liked the video for this song,

Chalk up another vote for this as the best single of the '90s. I don't remember the Verve having other songs on the radio, yet they have a Greatest Hits collection--perhaps they were bigger in the UK.

Notwithstanding the overall strength of this song, I personally have difficulties highly rating covers. While "Bittersweet Symphony" only sampled the Rolling Stones (well, technically a sample of a Stones cover as other reviewers have noted), it is this sample that makes or breaks the single. With that said, the song is definitely a highlight of the post-grunge late 1990's, with it's haunting lyrics and the aforementioned symphonic crescendos. Nevertheless, as a result of the lawsuit brought by the Stones' copyright holder, The Verve had to relinquish all of the song's royalties. "Bittersweet Symphony" charted in the U.S. for 8 weeks in 1998 (#12), but VH1 doesn't have much faith in the band doing so again, as it ranks the song #39 on its list of one hit wonders.

This is a brilliant song. I will never forget the music video and how incomprehensibly cool the lead singer was as he pushed through people on a crowded street. I recently listened to the infamous original song--Andrew Loog Oldham's orchestra (to my knowledge, Oldham wasn't even a musician, let alone the conductor of an orchestra) performing an arrangement of the Stones' "The Last Time." I don't really know where it came from or where it went. I don't think one can purchase it. But somehow the guys from the Verve got their hands on it, and it does sound similar to the orchestral part that became such an epic part of this song. The lyrics are very provocative. One of the best songs of the '90s, no question.
