A heartbreaking piece about a truly horrific chapter of Southern U.S. history, when members of one group of people used to hang members of a different group of people from trees in order to send a message that the second group of people weren’t really people. Or something. “Southern trees, Bear a strange fruit, Blood on the leaves, And blood at the root” With all due respect to the divine Ms. Holiday, I must say I prefer Nina Simone’s stark, terrifying version.
