Mon Apr 05 2010I have been giving my nine year old dog Back to Basics for eight years. I did not know they changed the formula, but my dog lost a ton of weight and became totally lethargic. Blood tests showed no obvious reason. So vet asked me to find out exactly how many calories in cup of food... I went online to look and found thhis site. I am convinced the food sickened my poor dog who is still really ill, even though I changed her food. Please Please if you love your dog, DO NOT feed your dog Beowulf Back to Basics.

Mon Jun 22 2009we have been using back to basics for our two pugs for nine years, we recently ran out and ordered two more bags of chicken, our male pug got sick within twenty four hours of eating the "NEW" formula and started passing blood in his stool withing 48. we took him to the vet and the vet changed his diet to something very bland. we thought he must have eaten something bad for him so after a week and two trips to the vet to have his stool checked for blood we put him back on the back to basics, same thing happend again. bewulf refuses to even take back the one unopened bag. we put them on evo and the male is improving every day. back to basics is not the dog food it used to be, it may make your animal sick or worse. be afarid, be very afarid, i wish i could give them a minus 5 star rating.

Wed Dec 10 2008It is also important to remember that nutritional requirements change as dogs mature. Therefore, it is a good habit to switch dog foods from time to time. If you use the same food forever, the missing ingredient that could make your dog healthier will never emerge. As happy as I am with Back to Basics, I will change formulas within the next year.

Tue Sep 16 2008The first ingredient in this food is a named meat product, in meal form. There is a second named meat product 9th on the ingredient list, but this is not a meal ingredient. It is inclusive of water content (about 80%). Once that is removed, as it must be to create a dehydrated product, the ingredient will weigh around 20% of its wet weight.

Wed May 09 2007Our Lab loves chicken, thrived well on it, and prefers it over other food. She grew up beautifully and quite smart. I wished I started her on this. Unfortunately, its quite hard to buy them here in the Phils. Her appearance deteriorated when switched to other food so I bring her back to basics even if its a bit expensive. I've used it over Pedigree (which has BHA) and Beef or Lamb Pro (Breeder's). Its highly recommended by highly experienced breeders here.

Mon Jul 03 2006My English Mastiff puppy has been fed Back to Basics since birth. He is now almost one year old and has suffered none of the growth problems so common to this giant breed. His coat and physical condition are top-notch and his health is excellent. I would recommend it to anyone seeking a top quality food!

Mon Jan 02 2006I like most of the ingredients in this food, except the second ingredient in the two dog formulas is corn?! I don't like corn in a food that is supposed to be "holistic." It is used as a filler, not of any nutritional value to dogs. A couple of dogs that come to the vet I work for (a Saint Bernard and German Sheperd) developed REALLY bad gas after switching to this food, they switched off of it (not sure what they switched to) and the gas went away...vet diagnosed it was b/c of the corn. ***For more discussions on dog food, visit my DOG FOOD DEBATE web forum @ http://dogfood.suddenlaunch3.com/index.cgi ***

Thu Dec 08 2005This is a great high-quality dog food. Very oily and high in fat. Also offers an excellent all-natural source of protein. I buy mine online at petgourmetexpress.com.

Sat Feb 19 2005I have a golden retriever and my breeder recommended back to basics. I thought to try out different foods when my dog started to gain weight. She did horribly. She pooped 9 times a day and never lost weight. I went back to back to basics, cut down the portion and she lost 15 lbs. The food is great and she loves the chicken.

Thu Feb 10 2005I have been using this food for 4 years and was doing quite well for our cat and Cairn Terrier. Last year something changed about their food but they will not admit it! Our dog suddenly gained 7 pounds--same feeding routine and he is only 5 years old! Our cat did the opposite, she went from 12 pounds down to 4 1/2 pounds and had to get help from the vet. He said she was suffering from extreme malnutition. No other health problems were found . Now you tell me--they have changed something or this would have NOT happened. No more for my animals --I have switched to Canidae and for the cat Felidae. They are both improving rapidly. So buyer beware of Beowulf Back to Basic cat or dog food pork or chicken!!!

Sat Jan 01 2005I have been feeding this food for 5 years. I breed dogs and they do beautifully on Back to Basics. It is shipped directly to my door and the price is reasonable for a food of this quality.
