Before Grain

My dog is doing wonders on this food. She loves the taste of the Buffalo. She started to shed pretty bad with another food and this is clearing that up just great. I love Merrick products and knowing they got in the low carbs/no grain game, I had to try it. She did great with the transition and I am getting ready to get her her second bag. Revision: I still think this is a good option to feed your dog, especially over grain based diets. After having my girl on this food for awhile, she did return back to the shedding and her stool never completely hardened up. I came to realize it had to due with the chicken that is in every flavor. My dog can tolerate chicken if it is around the 4th ingredient or lower, but it is too high in this food. Still a better choice than most foods on the market though. I just prefer TOTW Prairie or Salmon, Core Ocean, EVO Herring, and Orijen 6 Fish and Regional Red.

My dogs LOVE this food and it has healthy ingredients which makes me happy to feed it to them. It is a bit pricey but can you really put a price on your dog's health??

I think that it is a good food. has great ingredients. The only thing I dont like is that all their formulas have chicken in it. Not all dogs can eat chicken so that part sucks.

Please Note, I have NOT fed this food personally...That said, it looks awesome. The three isues I have are 1) many people report little or no interest from their dogs 2) the price is one of the highest, in the top tier for dry foods 3) they don't seem to have samples or coupons...just a sample bag I have to pay $X to get....if it was all that they would let my dogs have some or give me a coupon to get them addicted. Afterall, once my boys have smething they Love, how can Daddy say no? Price is NOT an issue when it comes to the daily feed, but when looking for the right food and doing sampling every dollar counts. Some foods don't last one meal in my house for one reason or another. (I do mix new foods in gradually but there have been some foods that were left in all three bowls the first time they were mixed...and the Pit pup eats the concrete sidewalk and bugs in the yard when I turn my back so what could that say about those foods?) I wasn't very impressed with this food. I fed it to both my dogs for about 8 weeks in total, 6 weeks without supplments or other dog foods. I used the BG salmon dry. My german shepherd developed ichy skin while on this food so she was always scratching. my shih tzu had a lower energy level so was fed more then the suggested guideline on the bag. both dogs had loose stools and neither were excited about eating it. when I was getting near the end of the bag I started supplmenting food with fish oil, glucosamine and tripe from Tripett. once I starting supplmenting their issues cleared up. I later learned this product was made by merrick which is know for questionable ingredients. Merrick pet foods also own thier own rendering plant.

I like the ingredients, but my dog had no interest whatsoever in eating this food, and he is generally devours new food that is offered him. I started mixing it with a topper to make it more palatable for him, but he would just like off the topper and leave the kibble. So no go around here. Too bad, because the ingredients look great. But my dog actually does much better with food that has grain in it- his coat looks better, and his stools are nice and firm. We went back to Eagle Pack, and he is very happy.

My dog did fine on the Buffalo formula, but as soon as I switched him to the Salmon formula, that's when I started having issues. He had really bad diarhea and I had to put him on rice and chicken for a few days to help clear up his problem. When he got better I decided to give the Salmon formula another try since I didn't know if my dog could have gotten sick by some other outside factor. Again as soon as he started eating the food his bad diarhea came back and this time he had to go to the vet. I was able to feed the rest of the bag to my puppy without any problem for her so for me it's been a mixed result with this dog food. I will say though that the ingredients are still better then any of that garbage you get in a grocery or big box store.

Before Grain...made by family owned Merrick brand..ah this food is wonderful...I now feed it to my cats and my ferrets along with the merrick canned food...i cant say enough about this food...its just too good =]

I've started using the canned food as a topper on top of Orijen. It is perfect. Better than Wellness Core canned meats. I use mostly the salmon and the tripe, which my pack loves. They look great, and the extra canned calories helps keep the weight on my non-stop dogs.It is also very reasonably priced for this type of product. I'm so glad they came out with this! Before popular grain-based dog foods became the norm, mealtime for dogs was provided by nature. There were no grains except at harvest season and there weren't any fillers in the food. Before Grain dog food is rich in high quality meats and nutrients the way nature intended.

The formula sounded great, but within 2 weeks of switching our dogs from the Innova Evo to the BG both of their coats started dulling, they started getting flaky skin and had very loose stools. I've heard reports that there is too much potato in the formula (I suppose they need something for a filler when it doesn't have grain), so this food is definitely out of the picture for us. The original Merrick formulas are much better if you're going to feed a Merrick product. It took about a month of them being back on the Evo before their "high gloss" coats came back.
