Beanie Babies

The true current value of a beanie baby is not monetary, and can only be understood by the parent of a child under the age of 5. Since these things aren't worth anything, you can pick them up for 50 cents a piece at garage sales. Probably 9 out of 10 garage sales have a big rubbermaid tub full of them. Sometimes if you buy something else they'll just give you a beanie baby or two when they see you have a little kid. They make for perfect non-noisy cheap toys for long car rides. When they get covered in juice and cheese cracker residue, you can just throw them away and get more.

I am sure there are still collectors out there that are hoarding on their babies, hoping that the interest will peak again in a few years. Only ones I ever purchased were special Sesame Street ones that I found for my daughter when she was a baby.

Like any investment in collectables, the key to making a profit in the market is that you must have four things going for you: - a solid understanding of the basis upon which market valuations are made, - you have to obtain one of the items at a price that is well under that valuation, - you have to have good access to the widest possible market for the product, and finally (and this is by far the most improtant part ) - you have to find a motivated buyer who has suffiicent financial resources to pay an artificially inflated price for something that is essentially worthless outside of the confines of the collectors market. My sister once had a Beanie Bear when someone offered her $100 for it. These things were highly collectible in their day....but like other fads, they went. I think they are still around. It does make a cute gift for someone though.

I had one of those, never thought it would be worth anything, but it was cute. Looking at the Amazon advertisements on the side of this page, I see that they are going for as little as 55cents. If you want one, now is the time to buy. But here's a little hint for those interested: Traditionally, for something to be of value, it has to be rare. Mass produced toys are never going to be worth as much as you think they will be. Sorry.
