Band of Brothers ('01)

After all is said and done, Band of Brothers ranks as one of the best, if not the best, miniseries ever created. The series is based on the excellent book written by Stephen Ambrose and tells the true story of "E" Easy Company, 506th Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division, USA, from boot camp in 1942 to VJ day in 1945. Easy Company was the most decorated American combat unit during World War II. The scenes, costumes and acting ring true to actual combat in wartime and the story of the interrelationships among this group of soldiers, this band of brothers, is filmed beautifully. A true masterpiece of cinematography. The battle sequences in the series are very realistic and are second only to the Normandy landings portrayed in the academy award winning movie, Saving Private Ryan. This should come as no surprise since Band of Brothers is the brainchild of Saving Private Ryan's director (Steven Spielberg) and lead actor (Tom Hanks). I can`t praise this mini-series too much it was first rate from beginning to end. The very fact that the story was not invented in the mind of an agile wrtitter, but taken from the lives of the very veterans being portrayed in the series. Who would not be honored & feel their life richer to know major Winters, Sgt lipton or the rest of the the fine men that made up Easy company, 506th PIR, 1st Airborne div. Great series, great performances, great men who made history.

I had to wait to see this as I didn't have HBO (?) at the time it was first broadcast. A very realistic look at the development and use of America's first true airborne (paratroop) divisions. From Normandy (D-Day) on it was realistic and intense. Great cast and production it gets my number one vote for best War movie ever. See a glimpse of what our soldiers endured and ultimately succeeded at in World War Two in Europe.

Well done, with some excellent performances, and a tight disciplined script.

I sincerely wish I could rate this higher than a 5. This mini series is about more than just war alone. It's about men who were extraordinary without even knowing it. It is the journey of men who started out as innocents and became men who struggled every single day for years for basic survival. They were not the killing machines you often see in war movies, but real people -- they felt the joys of friendship, the wonder of small comforts, the terrible emotional agony that comes with a comrade losing his limbs or his life. Band of Brothers is not merely a mini series about war. It's a piece of art from start to finish, with startling symbolism, well-timed humor, and a musical score that will give you goosebumps. Just be forewarned: make sure you have some kleenex nearby.
