It puts me to sleep, but people devote their lives to it & it takes extreme dedication, discipline & strength to master it,so I'll refrain from being a dick here.

Its almost more of a sport than a dance, and certainly not something that just anyone can do. I confess that as an artform it leaves me a little cold, but I can appreciate the skill and often brilliance of it. I am particularly fond of this, one of my favorite pieces of the more modern classical composers, performed in the style that caused a riot when it was first performed in 1913.

It takes an incredible amount of skill, talent, and hard work. However, just like gymnastics and figure skating, it is still incredibly boring to watch.

I've been a dancer for the past 13 years. It's the only thing that gets me through the day, as soon as I get home from school I do my homework, and then go to dance class at 4:30 until 9:30 every night. Ballet isn't all that hard unless you're on pointe. It's still not that hard once you get used to it, but it sure does hurt. I can't stand people who think we're not athletes. We probably work harder and dedicate ourselves to dance more than any other athlete does with their sport. All I do is dance, it's 100% my life. Most people in sports play multiple so they don't put their entire heart and soul into one specifically. Ballet/Pointe is simply amazing.

suppose it is nice to watch. never really was interested in learning ballet myself. seemed like for girls that "everyone" took ballet. NOT me. would rather learn most other  dances before ballet.

En pointe is very, very difficult. Demi-pointe is much easier. Ballet is the utmost graceful dance there is and therefore must be danced accordingly.

Ballet is the hardest dance of all. Ballet dancers I think are among the most physically fit atheletes in the world. They have a truly difficult sport. And yet they make it look rediculously easy.

I am a non-professional dancer and choreographer and ballet is the majority of what I'm trained in. It is the basis of ALL forms of dance so if you're planning on taking let's say jazz, take ballet as well - it will really help. Ballet is wonderful for posture, grace, balance, and all-around great exercise because it works so many muscles that many of us don't know we have. Pointework is my favorite part of ballet and unlike twinmom, I don't have ANY pain from it. There's MUCH better padding today than there was back then (now we've got comfortable gel-filled toe pads as opposed to just lambs wool) and there's even more comfortable pointe shoes (Chacott Veroneses and Gaynor Mindens, anyone?)! The best thing about ballet is, while it may be unrealistic to try for a career, no one is EVER too old to learn ballet for pure enjoyment. Believe me I've known sixtysomething grandmothers who were just starting ballet and they loved it. Well ballet is my favorite type of dance and I believe it's... Read more

I must have an unconsious hatred for my feet. I did this for about five years growing up and I remember mostly my bleeding toenails and pounding my pointe shoes with a hammer to try to break them in faster. Ballet is pretty to watch, but it is very painful. All there is in the bottom of those point shoes is lamb's wool and that flattens to the consistency of stone fairly fast.

Ballet is the most rigorous form of dance. The discipline, precision, skill, grace, and athleticism required of ballet dancers makes all of them worthy of respect. Ballet is the foundation of all forms of dance - how can it *not* be worthy of a 5-star rating?

Magnificent to watch. I admire the talent, discipline and dedication ballet demands. As a spectator, we are very fortunate to have the San Francisco Ballet, one of the finest companies in the country. We also have Michael Smuin who takes ballet to the masses. Michael Smuin's SF Ballet is innovative and original. One of one thousand reasons we are so fortunate to live in the Bay Area.

As far as watching it goes, I'm not into that, but I will admit that the people who do it are amazing athletes if that's what you want to call them.

Enjoyable to watch if you're in the mood for it. As for performing - it takes special talent, many years of dedication, not to mention you need to start when you're around three years of age. And like a professional athlete, don't expect to be doing it much past the age of 35 either.
