To all of you who posted below complaining about the age difference, you obviously did not get the movie. The age difference was what the movie was about. Did you not see the scene where the grandmother spoke with Gere's character about not hurting another member of my family? He had already dated and seperated from Winona's character's mother. The age difference was as much apart of the story as Winona's illness. I liked the movie a great deal. I thought it was thought provoking and original. It was very much a slice of life as we know it these days.

I really enjoyed this movie. Yes, the age difference was a little much for me but that is the way it is these day's. I really liked the cast.

I have to agree w/ the comments on the chemistry. I fully agree on that. I thought that the movie was alright. I am not a Ryder fan, nor am I a huge Gere fan, but I thought they should have made her a little older. A 26 year difference is a bit hard to swallow. When Gere kisses Ryder when they get back together, you can tell that he is hesitant. It was like he was kissing his daughter or something (ooohhh reeeallly).

Lack of chemistry is the best way to discribe this disappointing movie (& I that had so high expectations because it was set in New York!)... Boring & unnecessary. :-(

Am I the only one who is overlooking the fact that a 48 year old man falling for a 22 year old girl...I mean, come on, arent we rocking the cradle? I think they should have made the part for Ryder 5 years younger, that way we'll have a 3 minute movie of Gere getting locked in the slammer. Title the movie: PEDOPHILE IN NEW YORK!

That was the absolute worst movie I have ever seen in my life. There was no plot whatsoever and the story line that was very shallow was pathetic. I hated this movie!

Love story. Good film but story is only based on two people. It should extend and explain more about characters involved.

I enjoyed this movie but it was really a little slow. I also knew what was going to happen in the end and when it happened, I just didn't have any emotion.

Disappointing. The chemistry between the actors just doesn't work. You can't ignore their age gap and it makes it so unrealistic.

Richard Gere did notact at all. He mumbled his words. the last time that he acted wasin Officer and a Gentleman. Winoa Ryder needs to have some sort of energy other than depression to act with. Where did they get this story? Richard Gere has aged considerably since he met and started living with the woman and her child...so where is the child's father in allowing his daughter to be subjected to a live in boy friend and an illegitmate child? His movies are now a joke.

Sucked. It is difficult to get over the fact that Richard is 48 and Winona is 22. Additionally, Ricahard dated Winona's mom. How are we supposed to swallow that!

I expected a sappy, predictable, emotion-manipulating movie.Instead I found myself languidly moving through a story that was romantic without trying to play with the audience's emotions. Perhaps Charlotte was a little too playful to be credible when she told Will about her illness after their 1st night together, but then again, young people are known for denying their own mortality regardless of the facts. I loved the supporting characters, their lack of smugness and glibness, and their general humanity. In the hospital scene near the end, when Dolly doesn't allow herself to be denied her grief, it really broke the Hollywood formula for character resolution and 'niceness' in the face of tragedy. There were no cheap tricks and I felt hollow at the end, but life's just like that. Well done Joan!

I was told the movie was horrible, but I went to see it anyway. I was so surprised! I thoroughly enjoyed it. I found both Ryder and Gere to be very believable and I empathized with both of their characters. LOVED IT!!

This movie was just plain unadulterated terrible, shame on Winona and Richard for ever agreeing to do this. I hope Winona gets real fat and that Richard goes bald...My wife and I suffered through this and were both discusted, I was waiting for "Eddie Scissorhands" to come and rescue something.

What was the point of this insipid movie? Spare me Wynona Ryder-she has always been an absolutely vapid no-talent actress-Thank god for Richard Gere's fabulous hair, or this film would be TOTALLY useless..two stars for the hair.

The music is wonderful! I kept expecting Winona Ryder to say "Love means never having to say you're sorry". The characters were thin and not real believable.
