Sun Jun 22 2008Im an Australian who has both served in the regular armed forces and had the privilege to know some of the SASR and SAS blokes and they have all pretty much told me the same thing. The top 3 SF in the world are pretty much inter-changeable depending on the circumstances of the mission at hand; SAS, SASR and the israeli's. The notion of any American special forces unit being even compared to these three is beyond laughable, highly equipped but poorly trained is the best way to describe them; there is a reason why the British and Australians use the name 'Seppo's' to describe an American Soldier, seppo = septic tank = FULL OF SHIT!!!!!

Mon Nov 14 2005Thats not entirely true britburger, of course being english you will defend and argue that the British SAS is the better unit and im cool with that. As for the SBS being better i hardly think so and the Royal Marines, the SASR are definetly a better fighting unit, of course i am not bagging either of these units (SBS & SAS) im just saying they are all very efficient units and should all be recognised but the SASR has a very impressive record and the fact that there is minimal information on traing and selection. Put it this way i would rather be working with British SF Soldiers than American SF Soldiers, i no alot of vietnam veterans and current serving soldiers that would not go out on patrol with American soldiers if you payed them, Sorry any American readers thats what ive been told.

Fri Jan 28 2005the reason both the british sas and sasr are so good is because they are constantly working with each other through out the world. The aussies undoubtedly are deserved of the position of best sf group along with the sas and sbs. as a brit i am proud to call the aussies true allies

Tue Jan 25 2005Good grief, Muffin Man, what an emotional outburst! Such behaviour would not sdo you well on a SF selection course. I agree with some of what you say particularly regarding the Americans. They have embarrassed themselves on many occasions and cover up by telling the world that their special forces are so clandestine that their successes are never mentioned in the media. I think you are a bit over the top and naive having a go at the British SAS. They are universally regarded as being amongst the best in the world and cover more activites across the spectrum than any other SF in the world. Each nation tries to talk up its special forces in the interests of national pride. I know of South African troops who fought alongside Aussie SF in Angola and they told me the Aussies were bloody useless. The SAS had their disasters in the Falklands. The Americans......well they always have disasters. Given the training and knowledge available today the gap is closing amongst the world's SF with the ... Read more

Thu Jan 13 2005One can not fairly rate one special forces group against another. Each 'Spec Ops' group operate under directives unique to their nation's specific strategic and tactical needs. Considering the fact, in every special operations group in the world, one must volunteer to become a member, the best of the available best are the ones chosen. Candidates must undergo some of the most rigourous training ever devised by man and where olympic class fitness is the norm, rather than the exception. Each and every group has selection criteria specific to their respective nation's requirements. For example, if an off-shore oil rig was threatened, tasking French or Israeli's with the task could not be expected to be as effective as selecting the SBS or the TAG/OAT groups to tackle the mission. Likewise, if one wanted to set up a fire-base behind enemy lines and keep it supported, one could scarcely look past the US Green Berets to do the job. Suppose the mission was within the confines of a major city,... Read more

Wed Dec 29 2004I think that the australian SAS are easily one of the best special forces units in the world beaten only by the british SAS (possibly SBS as well (though their main role is slightly different to the SASR and therefore should not be compared)) and the israeli special forces.

Sat Dec 11 2004Look people. I dont think you understand the effectiveness and deadly precision that traits the Australian SASR as the best Special Forces unit in the world. Not only did the SASR achieve a kill ratio of 500, I say again 500 to 1 in Vietnam but have also saved an American Special Forces team in Iraq due to the fact that whilst retreating from outnumbered combat the Americans dropped their packs as they were taught in their training whilst the SASR troops kept their packs on as they were trained. And guess what; the Americans just so happened to drop along with their packs their radio communication devices. With out the Australian communication devices the American soldiers would not be alive today as they so boldly admitted on a Australia current affairs programme along with admitting that the Australian SASR is by far, the best Special Forces unit that the world has to offer. And Im sorry if your disappointed by these facts because you brains have been convinced of the false superiori... Read more

Sat Dec 11 2004I feel that every special forces unit from around the glove has things they do best, so it's a little unfair to pit one against the other, the SASR is a fine unit, don't get me wrong, but so are the US units like the SEALS, and the Brits with their own SAS. The Russians also have a good outfit too with Spetnaz, or however you spell it. Each unit has a slightly different mission they try to undertake, and that shapes the men who make up their unit. The one big thing for all of them is the training they do is hardcore, and the men show it.

Sun Oct 24 2004These rating reflect nothing more than one's nationality, and the PR received by each group. Still, the SASR and Aus Commandos are the best!

Thu Oct 07 2004I Spent 2 years in the Australian SAS in the late 1970's. During this time I was involved in operations in 11 different countries. The Australian SAS are constantly involved in secret operations around the world that you would never even hear about on the news, I suspect this is the same for the special forces of many countries. But although the SAS has no doubt changed since the 1970's I can tell you it is a high powered, highly disciplined unit and a force not to be taken lightly. It in my opinion it is the third best behind Israel's special operations force (SOF), and Britans SAS. Behind us would follow closely the US Delta force.

Tue Sep 21 2004I'd back the Ossies against any other special forces in world. They have proven themselves in the battle field time and again. They have something that just can't be taught no matter how much training you have....unbelievable survival instinct and tenacity. I don't know if comes from their heritage but I damn well know that I have heard some incredible stories about them from both WW's and Vietnam.

Sun Jun 27 2004The Australian Special Air Service is modelled upon the British SAS and as a identical structure. The training and selection or broadly similier. The australians emphasise is on oceania and south east asia. There are exchange postings and liasion between both units. It proved itself in both the malasian confrontation against indonesia 1962-66 and in various tours in vietnam in the mid to late 1960s.

Mon Jun 07 2004Im sure the sasr are good but to say that they are the best unit in the world is a little much especially with such other units like delta, british sas, canada's jtf2 and france's gign all of these units are trained very well and saying which is better is all a matter of opinion.

Mon May 24 2004best sf unit in the world
by britburger
Mon May 24 2004The SASR are probably the second best unit of their type in the world. They do compare somewhat favourably with the British SAS,a lthough they do not better it. The Australians are a formidable, deadly, and highly capable force but are lacking in some areas vis-a-vis the British SAS. They are, at least, equally as good as our SBS, and probably better than our Royal Marines. As for the American forces, there are some good units, but again, they are not nearly as good as either the British or Australian forces.

Mon May 24 2004Considered by many to be better than Britain's SAS.
by g_shock
Thu May 13 2004Undoubtably the best Special Forces in the world. the Australian SAS has trained US military services and although the British SAS is outstanding they do not compare with the Australian SASR. witha a 500 to 1 kill ratio in the Vietnam war and the CT units having to go through further tests to get into the highly experienced Regiment, this is no doubtably the most skillfull, deadly and smartist of all the special forces in the world. Read about the SASR and you will see and understand why they are the best of the best.

Thu Apr 29 2004Almost identical to Brittish SAS. Slightly less effective, some different emphasis; due to difference in native terrain.

Thu Apr 01 2004If you people think the delta force are so fantastic why did the ground commander of the US special forces admit to the Australian SAS being the best in the world? Just cause the d-boys are american dont mean there the best. they are very good indeed but they cant compare to the fighitng skills and discipline of the Australian SAS and the British SAS
