Atheism

Before I came to America, I thought people here might not have a religious belief, because I was told it's superstitious and not scientific(though I'm suspicious about thoes words). Even during my trip to where I live, I didn't know some classic buildings with a cross on top were churches. I talked to a deeply devout Christian a few days ago, and found another perspective: it could be a motivation to what we will get if we suppose that the god exists. Then everything becomes easy. If we help others; treat them good;not acting immorally, at least we won't fear some sort of unknown return. By the way, I'm interested in studying the Bible due to the difficulty of comprehension(for me, I'm an ESL student)

Atheism is in my eyes the truth. It is a religion in the sense its a belief. Just because its not a belief in a deity doesnt make it any less of a belief. I do not wish to push my beliefs on anyone, everyone has freedom of thought. Really though, belief in a god (ess) is just a humans way of explaining what he does not understand. So come back in a few decades when our scientific explorations have increased and tell me there is a god. And even if there is? What makes each religion so sure their god is superior? Humans need to feel part of a bigger picture. Atheism!!!! I'd just like to bring up the fact that many of these posters seem to think atheists have no morals, no care. Thats just bullshit. Just because we dont have guidlines drilled into our heads about how to live life doesnt mean we have the inability to care.

Atheism and nihilism go hand in hand and despite the likelihood of being true, the hopelessness and dejectedness that comes with nihilism really aren't worth the truth.

I attend the Congregational Church. Some people claim that we are atheists. Tell that to the little old ladies playing bingo at the annual festival.

I prefer my default mode, and since every human is born as one, lets just call atheists human beings. it If Atheism is a religion, then you will have to agree when I say that not smoking is a habit and that not reading is a hobby. If humans believe in things they can't see, smell, touch, taste or hear, then that is a doomed society.

A belief that everything randomly came out of nothing from nowhere and everything is going back to nothing and nowhere. A real nowhere life, with no hope and assurance of better things to continue. Tragic to the max when they lose a loved one they have no belief and hope that they will ever see them again. Real tragic.

Atheism is incredibly harmful and corrosive to society. Atheists undermine morality since they deny any sort of divine origin for the morals and ethics of the Torah. Atheism is the other branch of the same Greek tree that sprouted Christian theology. The basis of its error is that of matter having always existed (the ancient Greek concept), or that matter just suddenly appeared for no reason whatsoever (the modern concept which violates its own scientific laws of causality and entropy). Atheists teach that morality can be achieved by philosophy, which means that moral standards change with every cultural variable and fashion that comes and goes. Modern Atheism is, more or less, a reaction against the absurd and ridiculous theology of the Church, whose creed is best expressed by Tertullian: "Credo quia absurdum." The tenets of atheism, unfortunately, are just as absurd.

There are some hilarious definitions of atheism in this thread, and some stupid associations. This cannot properly be called a religion.  Athiests don't have places of worship, and they don't have a system of faith.   Three stars for the temerity (or ignorance) of including it, but someone needs a dictionary. A belief, or a lack of a belief, does not make for a religion.

Christians believe in the Father/Son/Holy Ghost combo, but reject all the other deities, demons, angels, etc. in the world. Atheists disregard them all. This is not a religion, it is rather the absence of religion. Definition "a strong belief in a supernatural power or powers that control human destiny" Ergo, atheism which by definition is the absence of faith cannot be referred to as a religion.

Atheist believe there is no proof that God does exist, there is also NO proof that God Doesn't exist. Read the conclusion of what your hero Darwin said, he said he could not prove with any accuracy or certainty that God Did Not exist in his hypothesis. If a Christian dies and Mr. Atheist is right, then there is nothing but at least we died with Hope, Calm and trust. Everyone has the right to choose what they personally believe. That's the true value of freedom isn't it?

It's still sad how Christianity dominates Atheism even with years of advancement in the mankind.

Atheism listed as a religion? Isn't that an oxymoron? Personally I have a hard time buying any of the arguments that God does not exist. Just like the physical body needs food, water and shelter to survive, our spirit needs God to subsist. Humanity doesn't come down to materialist notions, there are other things that go into the equation, things that separate us from the animals, that make us uniquely human. God is absolute truth, justice and goodness. Given this, how should that reflect upon us here on Earth? People tend to misunderstand who God is. The ancient texts like the Bible give us a clue: "God is a spirit and we must worship Him in Spirit and Truth"--John 4:24. Atheists are fools... the fool hath said in his heart.. there is no God, they will be enlightened one day, so again they are entitled to there own beliefs.

The more ideas about where we came from, the better. (Just so people know, I rarely talk about controversial stuff in real life. This is my outlet.)

In all religions there are some really annoying evangelicals that can't shut up about how great their religion is and they can't help but try to convert others. The religion of athiesm is no different.

Take more faith to believe that things happen ( ed ) because there was no reasonm for them not to happen ( ed ) The other thing is that when one is an Atheist one runs the risk that one has bought into the devil's lie. I don't think it is a good hedge. Agnosticism is more center.

Might as well be agnostic, because you can't prove that there isn't a god. To be an atheist is to know for a fact that there isn't a god right? Eh, well, I'm not far off. HOWEVER! Never rule out the possibility that he does not exist because he might just, though highly unlikely.

I am not an atheist, but it doesn't hurt me that other people are. That is their decision, and their belief (or lack thereof). So I don't think that it hurts or helps anyone in general.

i think anyone who says the've never doubted their being a "higher power" is truly a lier. at one point everyone does question everything,even their religion and beliefs not to say that they result in being an atheist. me myself i am christian but cause of hardships in life i have at once questioned the thought of their being a "higher power",sure i found myself and stuck to my religion, however ill never push religion on anyone its your choice & someone that judges you for it goes against one of their beliefs because "only God can judge".

I suppose by definition they would be hurtful to a Christian Society, or an Islamic Society, but that's what the Spanish Inquisition and the Taliban were put together to deal with.

I don't say it is true or false. But absence of a god (or essence or monad -or whatever else) would be really very sad and depressing for the universe.

I'm a Christian and I do have some Atheist friends. I wish they believed, but obviously they don't. It's not my job to convince them or force them. So....in some way, it hurts. But in the end, it's their decision.

This is not a religion and does not belong here. All atheists believe is that the real world around us should be evaluated by repeatable evidence.  Theories should be extrapolations from such evidence. Atheists have no argument with religion, per se, but only when they interfere with the measurable universe around us and when their religions interfere with the political system which governs all people, not only those of one or two religions which are in the majority. Some atheists think some religions in the US have been hijacked by unscrupulous people with alternate intent to build a power base of a population that can be manipulated into moving the country into their agenda.  So, they see danger in religion when people are discouraged in the peaceful aspects in their religion to live and let live, to live their own lives in what they believe to be the right path, but not to expect that their neighbor will have the same inclinations.
