i like her. i wasn't a fan of all the old stuff--i liked some. most of the lesbo chicks were into that. but then Ani grew up and started getting free-form Jazz-like, and her albums got better. i could relate. then the lesbos started hating her. why? also i dig her politics and ability to create her life/career the way she wanted, instead of pandering to Todd Bosses every day like the rest of us sheep do (except Numbah b/c he's the boss, but he's someone else's Todd Boss)

Ani D. is brilliant! Her live performance is worth any price of admission. Her studio records (especially Revelling & Reckoning) pale in comparison to the live show. Her blood, sweat, tears and passion show through every time. She is one of the most important musicians of our time.

once you get past the feminazi aspects of her music, (which can be hard to take at times) you see that she's really talented and a brilliant lyricist. I recommend (for the first time listener) Fuel or Napoleon or (for the ladies) Talk To Me Now (quite an empowering song!)

Ani Difranco is my favorite musician. I thought I might just open up with that. She has somehow evolved at the same pace as me over the last few years. Each album she's released has somehow fit into my life perfectly, and defined that moment in time for me. From bad breakups to politics, I have always had an Ani album. I've seen her live twice, and I'm preparing to see her again next weekend. I feel that Ani has changed a lot musically and her lyrics have also, and I can't lie and say that I don't miss the bouncy Ani of years past. But I've heard the new album, and I like it. She sounds a bit older and a bit tired, but I guess that's just what she is. There has never been a musician who can put my emotions into words quite like she can. She can take so much and put it into a single line. Her albums have been there for me when I needed it, and her music has touched my life many times. The only artist to physically make me sick by exposure to his or her art. How can anyone stand listening to her? Hear that strange sound? That's the sound of boyfriends' fingernails dragging on concrete by their girlfriends to one of ani's concerts. Smarter alterna-guys listen to ani or go to her concerts to pick up alterna-bi girls. I have never been so completely turned off by an artist's music, image, or cheap personal politics that are whiny rants. Punk is more energetic and honest than this shlock. "Ohh, she's gay. . ." Big deal. So are half of all musicians and all of Hollywood. Who cares? The best thing about being out of college is no longer having to listening to cultish Ani fans ramble on and on while I nodded my head pretending to be interested in her numbing conversation.

Great musician. Great guitar player. Excellent stage presence. I've seen her play three times in three different situations (large show in Minneapolis, smallish show in Chicago, solo acoustic show in Northampton), and each show was totally different and incredible. I'm speaking from outside her main audience demographic... that last show was at Smith College and I was probably one of four heterosexual males in the entire place... Ani is damn good.

Ani's old music is amazingly addictive, she's got it all. Her new jazzy music doesn't quite match up, though (released in 2001). i suppose she's not 'angry anymore'. Go for the old stuff and you can't go wrong.

i do admire her energy and brazen strength in the face of adversity. but i'm not crazy about her music, or her lyrics, honestly. they sound a little like my own attempt at creative writing, in which i pass on the rhythm and beauty of true, compelling poetry and just stick with the only thing i know how to do which is rant and bicker.

I was always intrigued by this kind of wacky, kind of wild, extremely beautiful woman I would see in my guitar magazines. I finally got curious enough to pick up "Dilate." I now have every album she has released as well as some bootleg stuff. She has this great voice with a unique singing style (she once said she had to find some way of getting drunk people's attention in the bars she played in). Her guitar playing (acoustic) is absolutely top notch and her songwriting is inspired and intelligent. I would recommend Ani DiFranco to anyone.

A couple of years ago, I went out to lunch with a friend from college. She was singing something and I asked her what it was because I loved the lyrics. She loaned me a CD, and I was hooked. You've got to respect a singer/songwriter who starts her own record label so that she can explore her creativity and not have some conglomorate telling her "what will and won't sell" and whether or not she needs to dance when she sings and that she needs to dress a certain way... She thinks for herself, and I think that's a rare quality in a musician today-- think about who the top selling "artists" right now-- teen pop bands. I've heard people say that she's selling out or that her music is not the same as it was, but she's growing and changing, and that will change her music, because it does come from her. I was introduced to ani by my wife who was introduced to her by her bisexual roommate in interest of knowing my girlfriend at the time i listened to not so soft. I couldent get enough after i realized she had the best vocal talent i have ever heard. For our honeymoon we went to her concert at the wolftrap in dc and i stared in awe the whole show and fell in love when i heard "Tis of thee" my new favorite artist

There are few artists who put out records that could lyrically stand on their own. Ani puts out music that requires you to solely listen to her words and forget the musical genius, or appreciate the music and just ignore the words. Basically, the lyrics and music are complimentary of one another and done so beautifully. She has mastered the art of collaborating the best of both worlds, and better yet, she didn't have to ask someone else to do it for her. She is absolutely brilliant, and I suggest that you sample her newest Revelling and Reckoning double disk. And it goes without saying, her concerts will rock your world!

I am writing this message to say take a hike to all of the former Ani fans who says she has sold out. Ani is still a creative lyricist, and muscian and did it all on her own b/c of her ambition and dedication to her art. So what if she's more commercial now. So what if she got married. So what is she sold a song to the NFL. So What. okay, Ani changes, and yes she's not as friendly to the fans as she used to be, b/c she has so many of them now it's difficult for her. Okay. REspect her art and let her be her own person. Now for all of you who haven't heard her i highly recommend NOt a pretty girl or revelling and reckoning. this represents her best work in my miind. I like Ani overall... I think she gets more attention and loyalty over the question of her sexuality and her gender then her actual art...wich is a shame...but seems to be the fate of most female artists that refuse to comply to the music industry's formula of big boobs on a barely legal blonde+ pure pop sacharine = success. Lyrically, I think she rises above the pop crap that's out there (Britney & Christina barbie dolls with exchangeable heads) although she tends to be a bit self-righteous at times. I admire her for retaining complete control over her music although she seems a bit torn at times between "selling out" and "artistic integrity" She doesn't like being measured by how much money she's made or how many albums she's sold but enjoys the new artistic avenues she's exploring playing with multi piece ensembles & the other big production sounds that this very money and status allows her. Ms. Ani DiFranco. She is quite an amazing being in the world today. I have been listening to ani for 4 years and I've slowly noticed a change. I began comparing her previous works with the present. And in my opinion, she was much better back in the day. I believe she is testing different sounds but her band begins to grow and so does she. I was told after an Ani show once that she would not be leaving to her bus until 2 in the moring. Well some of my friends stayed until then and you know what they got?? Shunned. She just walked right past them onto her tour bus. Her bass player came and talked to the four kids that were left, but she just walked right by. I believe that is one of the worst things a star can do. Without her fans she would be nothing. The more she grows, the worse she gets. She still has amazing talents and a lot to say and will alwayz have a tremendous impact on my life. But she needs to appreciate her fans as much as hse did back in the door.

Her music and her message are genuine and profound. She's not afraid to make an unpopular statement and I have the utmost respect for her. She is also, like Joni Mitchell, a master of alternate tunings and folk guitar techniques.

A few years back I we chanel surfing like I always do and I can across this women with a six string guitar singing her heart out on VH1's Hard Rock Cafe. I got stick on that channel but did not find out who she was until Feb. of last year. Since then I have been hooked. I have not heard anyone that writes songs the way she does. Not to mention she has a true talent playing the guitar while singing with that oh-so orignal voice...

Almost as good as Tori. She doesn't have Fiona Apple's not-so-perfect lyrics nor Jewel's several singing voices. I just plain like her.

Ani is one of the most beautiful people i have ever seen and heard. Her lyrics are so perfectly expressive, and her music so complementary to her lyrics, making each one of her songs prose, poetry, a symphony of raw emotion, but most of all just plain satisfying. Her music quenches the thirst of the quiet place we all have. I saw her live in november in NYC, and she is such a powehouse on stage. She is a top level performer, so full of energy and spunk and passion, what obviously fuels her fire. She is a genius and one of the top musicians out there.

As a fellow musician and songwriter, I am inspired to continue my craft by the likes of Ms. DiFranco. I met a girl just by recognizing her as a fan in her "Righteous" shirt. Also, as a brother bi-sexual, I know how great we are at art and honesty because we know ourselves better than thehaters and simple minds out there. Well, I think that I should begin by saying that when I first heard her music I thought that I was in hell. It is not that she is a bad person (although I am not too fond of bi-sexuals) but she was stating what she felt in the worst way possible. I was undergoing the worst experience of my life. She has some right ideas, womens rights, although not the most important matter in the world right now, somewhat significant. I think that she would have done more good to go plant a tree with the odd ball naturalists. Because that is better then puting hell on earth in someones ears. She is horribly distasteful. And I think that although something she feels might have use, the way she does it makes me want to rather burn myself alive. So as Analist stated (hence name, analist had the right idea) "To recap, anti war, helish voice, libera, bi-sexual... an obvious flaw in our society" Now those are wise words.

Personally I have three or four of ani difranco's albums. I think she is one of the best songwriters and musicians working today. She is a real live performer and always pushing her own creativity and talents. Her music is intelligent and new. She is probably one of the best and definitely the most inventive guitarist around. She has never sold out and that is very refreshing. Definitely one of the most under recognised and underapprecisted artists in the world. If you're thinking of checking her out i would suggest "living in Clip' which is a live 2 CD set. awesome stuff. it's almost unbelievable that she is playing that guitar the way she does and singing at the same time. If you live in the US check her out live. She rocks.

I think that Ani Difranco is perhaps one of the greatest musicians to ever walk the face of this earth. There aren't many musicians out there that have MASTERED guitar theory and method as well as she. She knows what's up! And, who cares if she is different than other musicians (responding to the comment that she is "anti-war," "bisexual," etc.) in what she has to say in her music? We should celebrate diversity! If everyone were the same, what would be the point of living? She is so amazingly talented that I can't think of one person who, if they had an open mind about music and music styles, could possibly NOT like her. She is great and I hope she continues to say something DIFFERENT than the rest of most of the music out there.

I don't think theres really anything i can say about ani difranco other then she has made me relize that every girland or women gay or not has somethig inside of them that is so powerful and if we choose to use that power or not we still have it there ready for us to yank it out and when/if we choose to we can live every day as an adventure and say what we strongly belive is right . How shall I begin..? after hearing of her I decided I would see how much [or little] talent she had. Hearing my first download [via napster] I found the song "Untouchable Faces" to be, quite possibly the worst 4:36 of my life. Her voice, like an endless murmur of hell that just wouldn't shut up.. Digging deeper into her past I found she is bisexual and was part of a political antiwar group....This obviously has left wing Liberal written all over it. This is part of the fact I am giving her a 1 star. However I do feel she is just for standing up for women's rights, but you can go a little too far. I have had the esteemed pleasure of being introduced to ani several years back. She opened for Dylan. I have to say that growing through my experiences, sweetened with her music, ani has developed musically in ways that her listeners, followers, admirers, never conceived. Ani has left different tastes on others palats, but still so refreshing does she remain. Her life has evolved from her lessons, and her experiences as many would not have imagined or wanted. I believe that ani is never going to become just someone, she is many things, with talents as expansive as the great blue. For those of you who have adorned her spirit through her music, can I offer some food for the mind. Don't cage her into a sterotypical type of musician. She will blow you everytime. Listen to how she has grown, and imagine where she has been. She has just as much to offer all of us lyrically, as she did when she started out in her car in 1990. xoxoxoShylo

One day I was 15, and I was on a train going to somewhere, a man gave me a cd of Anis to have, I didn't listen to it for a long time, 2years I think, then one day I put it in and I never took it out, My fav. song is Dilate, which is also my fav. album. I beleave she has a gift and she gives it out to every person who needs it. Every day I live I will be thankful that she is here, and that she gives her music out to the world, theres no one who can help out a girl in trouble anymore then her. Just listening to her music can give a person enough strgenth to overcome any problem, and her words are ones of power, anyone who can not see that is lost, and anyone who can say that she is bad is hiding the truth from them selves, she is the best!!!

I love Ani Difranco! Her music has touched my life in so many ways. She inspires me more than anyone I have every listen to before. I don't just hear her music I feel every lyric and note she sings. In the song Face up and sing Ani says I hope my music helps one women get through the day. Well her music does just that for me. I'm leaving this comment to share my feelings on Ani and make others interested in her.

I am 14 and keep hearing that i'm to young to listen to ani but I think that she is a wonderful artist. I learned about her from my 23 year old sister. We were on the way up to Indy and I fell in love with her the first time I heard her. Everthing she says makes so much since. Ever since I started listening to her I haven't really listen to anything else but her. I think that if you haven't listened to her then you should. She says stuff I've never heard a musician say in their music before. I think that if she would let her stuff be played on the radio she could go very big.

A random tape left in my car by the sexiest woman alive, I fell in love with something I had never heard before (industrial is where I got stuck in the 80's). Now I'm hooked, and will defend her "to the teeth"....

ani's music covers a wide spectrum and always promises something new. her lyrics are political & poetic. enough albums and enough variety to never listen to anything else!

As a bi-sexual, I guess I have a soft spot for "Angry Lesbian" music. Just the right balance of social issues and art.
