Kind of boring, but oddly the best choice for a grilled cheese sandwich.

American cheese gives shame to America. I don't even think that it counts as dairy because it's so processed... I guess if you want one thing positive...it melts well :P

Grilled cheese sandwiches and burgers aren't as American Classic or as comforting with any other cheese. But no, it doesn't belong on a cheese tray at a cocktail party along with brie and gouda.

American cheese is a distinctively American food product in that it's unspectacular but produced in enormous quantities. It doesn't have a sharp flavor or exceptional creaminess so gourmet chefs despise it.

In general, it's pretty horrible. But since there really isn't much that defines it other than being somewhat orange and sort of nondescript, you can occasionally get something that's referred to as American cheese that isn't too bad. But the individually wrapped slices that are called American cheese are almost universally bad.

I do not think American cheese is good on anything. If I'm going to spend my money on cheese, it's going to be something I like!

Bland cheese, but economical and a mainstay for the cheeseburger.

Yes, a great point has been made. We Americans have a weak ass variety of cheese with our name on it. There's stuff like pepper jack out there and we got shafted when this pretty bland cheese was given the name American.

American is the best for grilled cheese. I don't ever buy the individually wrapped though.

It has it's place such as grilled cheese sandwiches. It has to be real cheese, though. That stuff that's not even a milk product is pretty disgusting. Good ol' Kraft is the best.

What would a grilled cheese sandwich be without it? There is definitely a place for this mild tasting delight.

To all hypocrites who say America has no cuisine, get a clue. Fried chicken, roast beef, Country ham, chicken fried steak. I want to say Caesar salad was first made in America, I could be wrong. Soups, salads, the wide range of vegetables. I am guessing the meal you prepared the night before was an American dish, if it was unhealthy, that was your doing. Noone is forcing you to eat at McDonalds. Ok maybe not as exotic as some cuisines, but remember America does feed the world, American farmers produce the best beef and pork in the world, and we are the number 1 food exporter by far of any country.

the USA doesn't really have a traditional food. Everything they eat that isn't Fast food, came from europe. The most traditional food i can think of is burgers and fries, which is really unhealthy, but i have to admit, good

The only good property this cheese has is its even melting properties due to the large amount of oil it contains. Cheddar is much better on a grilled cheese sandwich than American cheese. American cheese is oily and lacks flavor, basically it's a poor imitation of cheddar.

When I think of 'American 'food I think of steak on the grill, what else? America does have a good range of tender steak cuts compared to other country's availability. Now I'm off to find the soulfood category...

This is my second favorite cheese, and NOT the individual wrapped stuff, that tastes like plastic, I can't see why anyone would by that crap, but the Kraft type in the little bricks, that you peel a couple slices off to melt on your hamburger, just heavenly. I think a couple slices in between french bread, with tomatoes, mayo and lettuce is a heavenly sandwich! BUT, that said, the Kraft American cheese is getting way to pricey for my income, so I have not purchased it for a while.

EW. this is by far the nastiest cheese, and i looove cheese. its just gross. especially when it's processed and in those little plastics wrappings. it makes me want to vomit. why would you eat this when you could have a REAL cheese.

Foul. Suprised it can even be considered cheese. this is the reason why Americans think cheese is what welfare types eat and why the rest of the world consider it an accesible delicacy.

Come on all you fellow Americans, patriotism aside, American cuisine has got to be one of the worst cuisines around. The only thing that saves it slightly is the enourmous amount of ethnic import the melting pot brought.

American Cuisine in my view is equal to Italian. Chicken, hot dogs, corn dogs, etc. But, best of all, are the fast food chains. I do not see how they are unhealthy. I eat it all the time, and I only weigh 120 lbs! O15 years old) Its a huge variety. KFC offers good chicken, Burger King and McDonalds are burgers and fries, and Friendly's is the perfect place for dessert. These fast food chains not only represent good food, but also capitalism.

The Worst. Bland, fattening, and unhealthy. If you want to see the results of eating the Standard American Diet (SAD), just visit a hospital sometime - heart disease, cancer, clogged arteries, etc. Plus as a cuisine it's BOOOOORING!

It's too bad someone stuck our great country's name on this cheap, inferior orange cheese. Makes no sense why it is slapped on sandwiches and burgers so much when other cheeses are so much more tasty. I've also heard that Europeans often mock this type of cheese as evidence of the lack of culture in America. How unfortunate.

American cheese is okay, but it doesn't hold a candle to true, honest-to-goodness Cheddar cheese. Sometimes it's good melted over fried potatoes or scrambled eggs, or for grilled cheese sandwiches. Other than that, I can really take it or leave it.

American cheese is kind of the "default" of all cheeses--a usually mild, all-purpose cheese which comes in white or yellow (both are alright, but for aesthetic purposes yellow does it for me). It's a staple for one of the best comfort foods--grilled cheese sandwich! Definately, the pre-packaged stuff that comes wrapped individually typically can't come even close to the deli cheese! The pre-wrapped cheese for many brands is kind of shiny, rubbery, and strangely smooth and weird. Good for kids, but if you're a big fan of cheese, it might be worth the extra money to go to the deli and get the Land o' Lakes American cheese. I tried it once, and never looked back!

I think of it as cheddar’s softer, more conservative cousin. American is an all-purpose cheese that is creamy enough that it melts well for grilled cheese sandwiches and just mildly sharp enough to compliment a bologna sandwich (with a little mayo and hot sauce, mmmm). All in all it’s okay, but too run of the mill to get very excited about.

Pretty good on a sandwich or just by cold slices. Otherwise, it's a pretty average cheese, which doesn't taste good melted.
