Fri Apr 30 2010I absolutely love French films so there will always be a biased on my part. Amelie is definitely one of my favourite French movies. The cinematography alone is just excellent. Audrey was so charming in this film I honestly couldn't have seen it being made without her. It's so abstract and different, but so enjoyable as the common theme in French films no matter what the genre is that there's always a story somewhere and you come away loving the characters and really care about their progression not to mention the fine attention to detail. Another French film I would recomend is La Haine and The Class.

Sat Sep 12 2009This film was so bizarre and such a lot of fun. I did not want it to end. Definitely an all time favorite foreign film for me.

Thu Feb 22 2007Just because it is a foreign film does not mean it is good. The plot is a woman doing good deeds along with garden gnomes. If you want to see this just go to the Salvation Army and then watch a Travelocity commercial.

Tue May 23 2006An entertaining but highly overrated movie. Notable mainly for its beautiful shots of Paris and outstanding cinematography. Otherwise, the plot is extremely thin, the characters are mostly comic stereotypes, and the movie goes downhill near the end. Amelie may be one of the best French movies of recent years, but that's not saying much. The French film industry peaked between the 1960s and 1980s, when it produced the best movies outside the US. In recent years, it has turned into a government-subsidized mini-Hollywood, pumping out mawkish, sentimental tripe on the one hand, and porno-violent garbage on the other. However, below the blockbuster level France still makes great documentaries, historical movies, and the occasional low-budget masterpiece (such as La Haine-a gritty film about teenage life in the violent, nihlistic Parisian suburbs, shot entirely in B&W; by the same director who made Amelie; and a much, much better movie).

Sun Sep 25 2005The second subtitled movie I've enjoyed (the first being the uproarious Shaolin Soccer--also released stateside by Miramax, who also released the 4th and 5th Pokemon theatrical features), Amelie is a surprising delight. The sense of humor in this, complete with a hilarious narrator, is quite unique and goes off on amusing tangents. The main character is very appealing--and decides to do good deeds for others. The movie is very well-paced and is quite creative overall. I personally don't think the movie is completely deserving of an R-rating--a PG-13 probably would have sufficed--as there is no profanity, no violence, and no dirty humor in the entire picture. And, yes, this is the hilarious origin of the Travelocity Roaming Gnome! ^_^

Wed May 04 2005Audrey Tautou is cute as Amelie. The movie is not as good as everyone thinks. Good chick-flick.

Thu Apr 14 2005I liked this movie for the most part. A young woman does a good deed for someone she has never met.{she finds a box belonging to this person from his childhood} when she returns it anonymously and sees how happy it made him, she vows to do good deeds for others. On the opposite side when she observes a nasty man who is mean to his employee, she plays some good little tricks on him. this movie can be funny and has several charming scenes. and in the end she finds happiness for herself. this is a nice feel good movie. it does drag in parts and is a bit too long. This movie is in french. with captioning.

Wed Feb 18 2004A truly passionate and beautifully done film about a woman trying to help others by sacrificing her own needs and going out of her way to do it. Amelie is a truly unique character, with her quirks and flaws and trademarks and she's had a hard life. Her mother was killed in front of her and she had to give away her pet goldfish at such a young age under brutal enforcement of her mother. But Amelie finds joy in every little thing about life. A uplifting film.

Fri Jul 25 2003This is probably one of the best French movies done in a long time. It's about this impish-looking little waitress who does something very kind for someone and then is infected by the feeling and decides to do more good thing for others. She also seeks the love of some stranger, and that sublot is creatively woven into the fabric of the movie and equally entertaining. It's funny and comforts the soul.

Wed Mar 06 2002I loved the first 45 minutes of "Amelie," a story about an introverted young woman who starts reaching out by secretly becoming involved in other people's lives. I found the movie creative, quirky, fun, and visually interesting. What bothered me was that it didn't seem to go anywhere after introducing all of the main characters and Amelie's superficial involvement with them. She never really got to know anyone, which made the movie feel flat and unrealistic, and I thought Amelie's "shyness" was pathetic and manipulative. The worst part was that the last half dragged on and on- I found myself praying for the end. When it finally came, it was annoyingly trite. I'm tempted to lower my rating to two stars, but I'll leave it at three because the movie started off on such a high note.

Wed Jan 09 2002This is said to be the best French movie ever produced, and I don't doubt it a sec! It's fabulous! It gives you such a good feeling, although Amelie doesn't only do good things...but we forget it 'cause the other people (the ones she doesn't treat very well) are very bad people themselves. It's said that Amelie discribes a perfect society that doesn't exist anywhere and which wount be realized ever... I'm not so sure about that. What the film discribes is creativity and actions done by heart. I know this exist. I think the people commenting saying that Amelie is unrealistic, say so 'cause they feel themselves would never be able to live up to the ideals of the movie. But don't blame the audience for that. I know many people as good as Amelie in the movie. Take Gandhi as an example! I would like to recommend to the entire world to go to the nearest cinema and see this beautiful film! This movie is actually said to better than La vita e bella (Life is Beautiful), American Beauty and Psyc... Read more
