Wed Dec 23 2009This food is one of the worst imo. Lots of corn little meat. Lots of by products, very low quality ingredients. Contains food coloring. My dog doesnt care what color his food is. I think there is a reason why they will not show their ingredient list on their web site.

Fri Aug 14 2009Dry or canned, Alpo is simply no good. Full of fillers, allergens, meat waste and toxins while containing no real nutrition, there is no good reason to buy this food.

Wed Jul 01 2009Awesome dog food! my lab likes the can and the dry!

Fri Jan 02 2009I have a black lab-mix and he is a very large dog. I tried feeding him Alpo to save a little money and it was one of the worst decisions I've ever made. I even introduced it to him slowly over the course of two weeks, mixing it in with with his old food just like your supposed to do to let his digestive system adjust to it and it still gave him the worst gas and diarrhea. I immediately put him back on his old food and the problems stopped within a couple of days. Alpo is a very low-quality dog food. If you're loyal to the Purina brand because it is more economical, I recommend Beneful or Dog Chow. HiPro is good too.

Tue Dec 30 2008They don't even list the ingredients on their website. The website bases nothing on nutrition, and aims to please soley the consumer through advertising appeal. The food just by first glance alone, is full of chemical dyes.Checking out the ingredients for their lamb meal, rice & barley formula, I am not impressed.Ground Yellow Corn, Digest of Chicken By-Products, Poultry By-Product Meal, Animal Fat(stabilized with BHA), Lamb Meal, Brewer's Rice, Ground Barley, Soybean Meal, Corn Gluten Meal, Whole Chicory Root, Salt, Potassium Chloride, Zinc Sulfate, Ferrous Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Manganese Sulfate, Potassium Iodide, Sodium Selenite, Choline Chloride, Vitamin E, A, B12 & D3 Supplements, Niacin, Calcium Pantothenate, Riboflavin Supplement, Thiamin Mononitrate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Folic Acid, Biotin.I feel so sorry for any dog that has to eat this, because the owner doesn't know how to read an ingredient panel and/or is swayed by fancy advertising.

Fri Oct 10 2008This is the favorite brand of both Jennifer Anniston and Sarah Jessica Parker. You put this out for them and you're guaranteed to see the "All Gone" inscription at the bottom of the bowl. It's an old school brand, but, it keeps both of their coats nice and shiny.

Wed Sep 17 2008I DON'T have a religious agenda. I've had experience with Alpo, too. It's crap. It's almost as bad as Ol'Roy. If you're feeding your dogs Alpo, you might as well get the money ready for that last vet bill and dig that hole for Fido under the tree. Because, Alpo makes dogs dreadfully sick. i've seen it first hand. On Alpo, my American pit bull terrier (these dogs can eat almost ANY kibble you feed them) got sick. She'd puke up her guts. She lost all her energy. She even got snappy and aggravated easily. At first, I didn't know what was going on. I thought for sure something was wrong with her and we'd have to have her PTS. Guess what? The only thing wrong with her was the crap we were feeding. All I did was switch her off Alpo and her coat began to shine, she became the friendly dog we all love and she was no longer sick. Swear by Alpo all you want, one day; you'll learn.

Thu Aug 21 2008I am a Vet, and I will agree with all of you when you say that Alpo is the worst food on the market.I have lost count how many animals have come into my clinic as a result of piss poor quality food. Spending the extra 10 dollars on some quality food will certainly make up for a bill from my clinic, or the loss of your furry friend. I have a 8 month old husky, and the only thing I feed him, and what I recommend to my clients, is Go! Natural. I cannot even begin to describe the amazing quality that this food has. Your dog will look better, have more energy, will sleep better, and above all, keep him healthy, inside and out! Dr. Owen R Kalina Kalinatek Veterinary Medicine

Sat Jul 19 2008I have raise two set of Boston Terriers on Alpo Dry. My first set live well and grew old. Their coats were always shiney and like all Bostons extremely energetic. They live their life with no health issues. I am now raising two littermates (also Bostons that are 6 1/2 years old) on Alpo Dry. My girls are healthy, muscular gals. They have beautiful coats and are extremely energetic. I asked my vet about the dog food when I first started feeding my first set of Bostons back in the 80s and people acted like I was the worst dog owner ever. My vet said your dogs are healthy with beautiful coats, what you are feeding them works for them. When the Chinese death food was in the country last year...I was glad I was feeding them Alpo. At that time I taked to a friend who is a vet, she said you are lucky, all the ingredients are made here. So, you can be appalled if you like, but I love my happy healthy Bostons!!!

Thu May 22 2008Alpo almost killed my dog. As soon as I started feeding him Alpo he began throwing up at least 4 times a week. He began shedding HARD (in the middle of winter) he became groggy all the time and would barely make it on our long walks to the park. Eventually I started reading up on this and found that Alpo is one of the worst things you can feed your pet. I changed his diet to "Wellness" and I almost immediately got my old Duke back.

Fri Mar 28 2008Alpo gave one of my dogs terrible diarrhea, and we mixed it with dry food. I didn't see anything great with it. All four dogs were very lazy and they got fat off of this. They live inside and out side. They have their own indoor room that is lead to the outside back yard. I wouldn't feed my dogs this anymore because they don't seem to get healthier.

Sat Jan 26 2008Worst dogfood I've ever bought! I wouldn't give it any stars. First let's point out I don't have a "religious agenda" - what exactly is that regarding dog food anyway? Most people feed their dogs "treats" of the food that was going into the trash. Face it, most people treat their dogs as garbage disposals, lets not feed them crap out of a can that's supposed to be good for them. Alpo - the worst food I've ever given the dog. I have tried it over the years many times with different dogs over the years - after all it's supposed to be good right? Everyone knows Alpo. I would now use it only if I think the dogs need a quick wormer. One can, guaranteed results - if you want the dog to poo everywhere and not stop, followed by a need for a bath - for the dog and all its things - since it the diarrhea gets everywhere.

Wed Jan 16 2008I cringe that I actually had to give this food one star. It deserves a negative rating and should be banned from the market all together. This food is terribly disgusting. I think your dog would get better nutrition from eating out of a garbage dumpster and a litter box than if they are fed Alpo. If the company that makes this won't tell you whats in it, why the hell would you feed this to your pet? Wake up people, do some research. Would you let your kids eat SPAM everyday for the rest of their lives?

Wed Oct 24 20071 of the worst foods on the market today still. Take a look at that ingredients and look at all the filler and nonsense that they put in this food.

Fri May 11 2007This is a really, really, really nasty dog food. Check out the ingredients below, and tell me honestly how anyone can feed this to their dogs. I give this food a 1 star rating simply because there is nothing lower. If any reviewer says differently, you can disreguard all of their reviews. Read this review than read one of the positves and compare.Alpo Prime Cuts Dog Food Ingredients: Corn, Beef & Bone Meal, Soybean Meal, Digest of Chicken By-Products, Animal Fat (preserved with BHA), Poultry By-Product Meal, Brewer's Rice. The PRIMARY INGREDIENT in the food is corn (it should be meat!). Corn is a problematic grain that is difficult for dogs to digest and the cause of a great many allergies. Beef and bone meal is a low quality meat product. Soybean meal is a poor quality source of protein and is the number 1 cause of food allergies in dogs (outstripping even wheat). The next ingredient is by-products. It is impossible to ascertain the quality of by-products and these are usually prod... Read more

Thu May 10 2007Alpo dog food....can one really even call it dog food? With its deplorable ingredients, it is no wonder dogs on cheap crap like this only live to be 10 or 12. Ironlically, they do not post the ingredients of this food on their website, so I had to go to a few different sites just to find out what the heck they put in the food. Let me tell you, I was appauled! This junk is no better than Kibbles N Bits! Not only does this food have an insane amount of corn, but corn syrup!?!? Thats sugar people...why the heck are they putting sugar in the dog food? This food also contains one of the worst ingredients known to the pet food industry, Meat By-products. Notice how they do not tell you what type of meat they are putting in the food. That is becuase they want people to assume it is chicken or turkey (if it was, they would be able to put chicken by-products...or at least poultry by-products if they weren't sure what type of poultry they put in this junk) but no, they say meat. Meat by-products... Read more

Thu May 10 2007The dogs I grew up with lived long healthy lives on Alpo....and since I have HAD ACTUAL EXPERIENCE with the product and I'm not on some sort of RELIGIOUS AGENDA, I thought it best I review this on that basis...does Alpo create long lived healthy dogs. Yes. It does. This is based on RESULTS. Not lies, hype and exaggeration on the internet offered to gullible people.

Wed Mar 21 2007Feeding your dog cheap quality brands like 'Alpo' is like you eating nothing but McDonald's junk! Your dog, and you, will eventually get sick!

Mon Mar 19 2007This food is saturated in fats and sugars so it will taste better for your dog. Good foods should not need this, plus it's horrible for your dog's health. I opened a can of Alpo for a dog at the kennel I work at and found several small bones in the food; you can't convince me that it's good to have that in dog food!

Sat Jan 27 2007I actually tried a little alpo on a slice of fresh bread and it tasted horrible. Also had diarrerar that was a lil orange in color. No wonder its bad for dogs.

Sat Sep 02 2006My dogs hated this food! I couldn't believe it! They usually love wet food but this and skippy dog food was the only kind they refused. Even my vet says this is a bad food. Big thumbs down.

Sat Mar 04 2006As a groomer, my fellow groomers & I usually can tell the dogs fed Alpo (or similar brands)...loose orange (yes orange) stools, gassy, horrible teeth and breath and nasty skin.

Fri Dec 24 2004I hope these people can sleep at night. For all the toxic waste that they add into the mix that they don't tell us about, let alone the junk we do know of, shame on them. They make it extremely hard to pin down a list of ingredients. What does that say about them, I wonder? Most dog food companies are convinced they are the best, so they happily list ingredients where they can be found easily. Not so Alpo. What are they trying to hide? I have found they have BHA (a substance that can be harmful to your dog), artificial color Red 40 & the number one ingredient is ground yellow corn. Ground yellow corn might be on the menu for a pet gerbil, but not my dog! Animal and Poultry Fat You may have noticed a unique, pungent odor when you open a new bag of pet food -- what is the source of that delightful smell? It is most often rendered animal fat, restaurant grease, or other oils too rancid or deemed inedible for humans. Restaurant grease has become a major component of feed grade animal fat o... Read more
