This dojo has realistic training. The mental training is great. Some of the routines that they do really get your adrenaline pumping. The Sensei is a good teacher. The students in this place are not very welcoming. The training focuses too much on roundhouse punches. The physical fitness aspect leaves something to be desired. The facility is on residential property so you have to park a mile away and commute with other students. You have to bow out before you leave class and this happens after they are done talking which can go on forever. The students look at this guy like some genius philosopher instead of a teacher which can get very weird.

In every city I visit, I travel a lot for my work, there are always numerous martial art schools. Most of them are commercial in nature and focus mainly on children. You watch the class and leave feeling somewhat empty. There doesn't seem to be any tradition or actual martial art application behind what you witnessed. About 3 months ago I visited the Aikijutsu Academy of Indianapolis. I had seen their website for years and was very excited to see it in person. I was extremely impressed by this place. The Sensei teaches out of his house. He has the dojo area, a bathroom / changing area and an office. I have never seen such an authentic looking dojo in the US. It is beautiful. When I arrived, the class was already meditating. The lights were down low and the sweet smell of incense was permeating throughout the room. They meditated for about 20 minutes and then walked in a circle for 5 min. The Sensei entered the dojo and the class lined up. He then bowed the class in. The atmosphere w... Read more

This school is one of the best schools in the country. Simply finding an Aikijutsu dojo anywhere is near impossible. Of the ones I have visited, the Aikijutsu Academy of Indianapolis is the best. Aikijutsu is not an easy martial art to learn. It takes years of dedication and sacrifice. I have trained under Hanulak Sensei for many years and I can't begin to express what I have received. Hanulak Sensei is someone who sometimes can be misunderstood by some. He is one of those individuals that has done a lot in his life. His experience with self defense is real. He has no patience for silly, foolish people. But thats the type of Sensei you want! I of course fully endorse the Aikijutsu Academy of Indianapolis and Ted Hanulak Sensei.

Good points: The teacher is knowledgeable, the system seem solid, people are friendly, beautiful Dojo. Bad points: The teacher has questionable rank, the price is to high, cult like atmosphere, Egos.

The Aikijutsu Academy of Indianapolis is a great dojo. The training is real. This is very rare to find today. I have trained there for the last 7 years and owe a great debt of gratitude to Ted Hanulak Sensei and the rest of the students. It has been a true honor.
