Can you say "Redundant? " I am waiting for a weblist that ask about the size of the reviewer’s poop. Or which member is going to puke first after riding El Torro?

I'm pretty sure this has already been incorporated. I think it's nice to be able to rate other reviewers, but sometimes it is a bit overused.

Well we already get lists of reviewers with people rating them, but I guess this means a specific rating system. I'm not sure I'd be too keen on being rated as a reviewer - I don't think I'd like the ratings :(

Actually, what I think we urgently need is a moratorium, if necessary imposed by admin, of all lists dealing with reviewers. I, for one, (though I know I'm not alone in this) am sick and tired of lists of RIA reviewers, all of which have the same items, and by and large all have the same reviews. Such lists do nothing to advance the site, the entertainment value of being here, or provide any useful information.

It would no doubt have the possibility of being a good thing and it would definitely be an interesting feature. However, based on a few of the flame wars I've seen popping up from time to time in the comments sections I would say this could get very ugly, very quickly. We already have a feature to send private email so that may be enough to either praise someone or vent personal problems. That and, if you don't agree - WRITE ABOUT IT!

No. We already have the 'Best RateItAll Reviewers' list, and there would be the resident troll going around giving everybody one-star ratings. It's completely unecessary, especially as we are already ranked through our amount of helpful votes.

I already have 14 ratings of one on the weblist, thanks... UPDATE: On a related topic, spineless reviewers who snipe at me and block me so I can't respond are some of the saddest creatures on RIA. Not naming any names, Jonnn, but cracking jokes about my mom dying is weak and pretty tasteless. Mom said you can kiss her ass, by the way.

not a good idea. i will not want fellow reviewers slandering me on the internet because of my opinions. Someone would plot to kill me because I listen to bubblegum music and they listen to country music and this would be the way to attack me. Besides, Magellan has a list of reviewers if you want to rate them there.

This might seem like a good idea. But you'd have to admit that this would cause a lot of conflict in most cases. If I were to comment negatively on someone it may cause them to retaliate against me and would only lead to more bickering.

It just seems like a waste to me. If you agree or don't agree with somebody's opinion on this site and you absolutely have to let them know how you personally fell then send them a message. You can always give them your own personal rating if you wish.

How can you rate someone who dont even know, or havent even met? Add this ability and just watch the flame wars come and go. I personally dont want to be "rated" by people I have no idea who they even are. How would the average reviwer here benefit from this?

    Tue May 20 2003

Oh, that should be interesting, especially with all the raters who rate themselves higher and we know who you are. Shroomwoman says it all- we get judged enough every day so why should we have to face more judgement on this site? Also, everybody knows that the ratings left would be totally useless and based on whether people like your opinions or not just like the helpful/not helpful buttons are useless.

Well, we've already got the "Was this comment helpful" button, so it seems repetitive to allow someone to rate the person as a whole, not to mention a very flawed idea. This would promote a lot of bias; just because you don't agree with one person's view in one post, it doesn't make EVERY post of theirs invalid, and by putting this feature in, it's allowing a person to say: "I've read at least one review from this person, and I don't like it, so they are ALWAYS wrong." I've read many reviews from people I disagree with, and though I disagree some arguments are well-written and presented. Many people wouldn't even read the review in full, just look at the number of stars they put up, and if it's not what they would have put, they would rate the individual "unhelpful". I don't think this feature would add to this site at least not positively.

  • by

    Sun Mar 30 2003

This is a horrible idea. This would turn this distinguished site into nothing more than a popularity contest, where people would stop writing based on their opinions and write simply in agreeance with the popular mindset in order to get more votes for themselves. This would definately alienate many reviewers who may get discouraged simply because they are not rated helpful because someone disagrees with them.

No way! Like I said in the "New Rate It All" list, I think this is a terrible idea. This site is supposed to be fun. I don't want to see people getting all upset and attacking each other for their opinions.

No way! That would be getting way too personal. Several of you made some excellent points. If a reviewer were to get a low rating, the negative comments about him/her would be posted for all to see. There are a lot of people who are sensitive and have short fuses, and before you know it, there's an all-out war. Ewwww, what a mess!!! We're better off sticking to the user's personal mailbox.

    Tue Jan 14 2003

I think this would lead to a lot of trouble - I'd hate the idea of someone being able to rate me, especially if it was a bad review or the comment was personally attacking me. I have a very quick temper and would react to it and have a blazing arguement with them. The only way I could see this working would be if all the comments that were left were constructive and gave a new viewpoint as to how to rate something, not attacking someone as a person (I admit, I've most probably done that myself, slap on the wrist) and being generally absusive.

It would probably invite a lot of flame wars if we started rating each other. We should just stick to rating everything else. I know I did not come here to be personally rated. That is what i like about being able to Write to someone personally in private. If someone disagrees with another person about something they have rated, they can rate the same thing and give their own point of view.Besides we are already being rated in a way with all the agrees and disagrees next to our opinions.

Commenting on other reviewers would be fun, but it will most likely degenerate into nasty name calling. Most people do not know how to engage in constructive criticism or even back up their point of view. Name calling is the last, and sometimes first, resort of the truly ignorant... And since most people refuse to even read other people's opinions before they make up their mind on any given subject, the comments about reviewers will just be hateful stereotypes anyways. However, I certainly welcome the comments of all, even though I realize that most reviewers will simply project their reactive emotions and false misconceptions about me in the review without offering any meaningful substantiation.

Have you ever heard of the expression 'Don't air your dirty laundry in public'? I think it applies here. I already know there are people on this site who disagree with me on alot of things (Texx and I seem to have it down to a science). I don't need to read a page of comments by the people who disagree with me saying that they hate my guts. I am not saying don't have disagreements, that is what this site is about. But we already have the ability to send personal messages to people. If you have a disagreement with someone, send them a message. I don't think it is necessary to post these personal messages in a public forum where every John and Jane Doe on this site can read them.

I must admit i'm not keen on this idea.I'd be happy to praise those reviewers i admire, but can already show appreciation by the message system or marking comments as helpful. And i'd get no pleasure whatsoever spending my time finding fault with other users, when there's a whole world out there to enjoy.Though there are many sensible reviewers here,(in fact the overall conduct is quite praiseworthy, only rarely abusive, and it's clear that most helpful/unhelpful markings are based on reading the individual comment, not a reflex action towards the reviewer)i fear an escalation of tit-for-tat criticisms might soon clog up the website. Some would certainly judge other reviewers not by their actual qualities but purely by the level of disagreement over opinions.Rateitall might soon become Rateallothers, and unbalanced.I like the current variety.Needless offence could be caused to sensitive souls(i'm not too thick-skinned myself),and possibly deter further contributions.I'm happy with the current ... I agree with TheFreak that this feature would add confusion and mayhem to the site -- but I don't agree that confusion and mayhem would be a positive addition! I'd like to add my voice to those suggesting this feature has the potential to create flame wars, criticism that isn't constructive, focus on specific reviewers rather than their comments. People who have things they'd like to say to specific reviewers can use the personal message feature and deal directly with their differences. I believe many people wouldn't leave comments if they felt their reviews would be rated by other reviewers, and we'd be left with reviews submitted only by people willing to open themselves to attack by those who don't agree with them. Unless, of course, you want to add the ability to submit an anonymous review? I don't think this is a desirable route.

This would be a great idea! Imagine how much fun and excitement it would bring to the sight! It would be a good form of constructive critiscm and the idea has unlimited potential. The raters that leave better comments would therefore be rated higher, while the people that are often rude, uncomical, abusive to others, and so on in their comments, would have it reflected in their ratings. You could put the rater's rating when they leave a comment so people will pay more attention to those. This idea brings fesh excite and enthusiasm to this site. Go for it, RateItAll!!!

I don't like the idea of other people rating me. The reason I like this site is because I can state my opinion on many different topics and not have to worry about getting flamed because I don't agree with someone. I don't want someone rating me negatively because I don't like their favorite TV show/music group/etc.

I happen to like this idea. I've already thought up some things that I'd say if I had the chance to comment on some of you guys. I know it doesn't sound particularly good to be "rated," but perhaps it could be more of a constructive criticism experience. We could rate users on account of how helpful their comments have been and how well-spoken they are. Not on account of anything else- remember they don't submit comments that contain discrimination. And what more, we could make personal profiles with as much personal info as we want, and people could comment on what they think of your opinions, and it could become an even more interesting site. So there you go.

What on earth is better than a little bickering? I would enjoy reading a page where other people could rate me! I would applaud the people who like me, laugh at the people who hate me and then start a nice long debate with them---NOAH---and it would really assist me in leaving helpful comments. Let's all give this good ratings so Rateitall will add it to the site! It would cause confusion and mayhem, and I love confusion and mayhem!

I do not think that being allowed to rate other reviewers or being reviewed yourself is such a great idea. If a user has an issue to bring up with another user about a certain issue, he can simply leave a personal message in his Rate-It-All inbox. There is no need to be airing personal disagreements about people in public without their implicit permission.

if i had a little more faith in people using this feature properly i might have a different opinion of it, but with that aside i think there are better reasons why this feature is not necessary and would not prove useful. even if i find a reason to rate a reviewer, i should have to read a lot of what they've written before i do so. i don't think many people will invest the time to do it properly, and will more likely base their rating of a reviewer on whether or not they agree on one topic rather than valid points presented throughout. do we really want people reviewing with their own rating in mind?

Okay, I see this two ways-- I would love to know where I stand as a reviewer, because I try to leave helpful and clearly explained comments, and I know I'm not the only one. I also think it would be really helpful to know when you read a comment left by someone how helpful their other comments are, but can you not tell from reading that comment how helpful they are to you? The flip side of that is that suppose someone reads one of your reviews, and let's assume for the sake of argument that you are an extreme liberal, and that's evident in what you wrote... An angry, offended person who is at the opposite end of the political spectrum might come along and give you a bad rating as a reviewer based on the fact that they didn't agree with your views... not on how factual or well explained your views are, but just because they didn't agree with you. I honestly feel that such a rating system wouldn't help- that it would give someone the option of publicly judging you as a person instead of ... Read more
