Jokes aside, you have to admit that Californians have been ahead of the curve on a lot of things. The "land of the fruits and nuts" produced both Ronald Reagan conservatism and the environmentalist movement over 40 years ago. California has historically heralded many social and political trends.

02/03/2007		I am not necessarily saying that it is a positive that CA is a bellweather for the rest of the country. Their high population and varied demographics make it a harbinger for new ideas and a libertarian outlook on social issues. That said, I absolutely agree with you that CA's overburdened infrastructure can and will likely become the wave the future for the rest of the country, as the population throughout the country will increase to similar levels.

02/02/2007		Being ahead of the curve doesn't really qualify as common sense. Californians have always been ahead of their time and open to new ideas. Given that Cali's politics, fiscal system, infrastructure and secondary schools are heading towards Mississippi-like levels, Cali's 'bellweather status' does not bode well for the rest of the US.
