 | abichara (62) 06/11/2008 | The Republicans failed to recruit a top tier candidate to go up against Louisiana Sen. Mary Landrieu (D), as a result, she will likely be re-elected in November. She was barely elected in her first race back in 1996 and she won by only 1 percentage point against 2nd tier competition in 2002. This year she is running against State Treasurer John Kennedy, who until recently was regarded as a liberal Democrat, but is running as a Republican. In fact, in 2004 he ran for the Senate as a Democrat, but failed. The GOP will likely focus on this race, because it's their best chance at picking up a Senate seat in November. Louisiana trends Republican and they hope that a strong turnout of conservative voters will help the ticket downstream. I think Landrieu is in decent shape for re-election, but it isn't in the bag for her. She has yet to win a statewide contest by a convincing margin. That may change come this November however.
