Apple iPod Touch
3
I've always hated iPods, but when I had a Touch given to me for free, I wasn't about to complain. I set my bias aside and realised that these weren't nearly as bad as the originals were. However, they're still inferior to Sony (the MP3s with by far the best audio), Zen (a media device that, while not the best, may be the best deal for those on a budget, and who aren't audiophiles or obsessed with having what's 'hip' or anything), and Phillips (known to be pretty buggy, but are otherwise fantastic players as a whole). I consider the iPod to be on par with Zune (both are produced for the masses and over-hyped, but neither are terrible trash, either).
For me, I really despise that I'm forced to use iTunes, one hell of a faulty program, and that so many files do not work correctly on the iPod. Also, as a great music lover (as opposed to those who buy MP3 players as casual listeners), I'm very irritated by the average-at-best sound, along with the lack of any great equaliser settings. My other complaint is that, in general, I do not like the controls that the player uses - they are very sensitive in some situations, while in others, it's hard to get a response. Personally, as far as looks go, I prefer something not so bulky, too, for something with such little space (sure, it's definitely thin, but it's pretty big otherwise).
My review in a nutshell:
It's a decent MP3 player - much better than what iPods used to be - but definitely overrated. For the price, you have several other options to choose from, with players that have better sound and more space. If you're really into music and don't care about things like apps and how well it can play a video and such, don't waste your time with any iPod, especially not the overpriced Touch. However, if audio is not necessarily at the top of your list for an MP3/portable media player, and if you can afford the pricetag, an iPod Touch should, indeed, suit you just fine.
Of course, coming from somebody who wants an MP3 player to function first and foremost as a quality audio machine, iPods are certainly not for me, and I'll be buying another Sony Walkman once I get the money. But for now, the iPod Touch IS holding me over. There's better out there, yes, but it's getting the job done, so I will give it the three star rating that it deserves.
