This tribe is an amalgamation of dozens New England tribes that regrouped after European diseases nearly wiped them out. To avoid extinction, they moved North into present-day Quebec, where approximately 2000 Abenaki reside on two resevations, with another 10,000 dispersed throughout Canada and New England. The Abenakis call their language Alnombak or Aln8bak (8 is an old Jesuit symbol for a nasalized, unrounded 'o'.)
