Today is July 24, and on this date in history, in 1911, Hiram Bingham discovered
Machu Picchu. This is often referred to as the Lost City of the Incas. It always amazes me how such large items can drop from human memory, but it happens all the time, in history.
I don't think I would classify it as a new wonder of the world, but it was a marvelous discovery, having been lost from memory and history for several centuries.
Binham wrote a book about the discovery and the National Geographic has covered it extensively. It is unique in that heavy stones were quarried and placed about 8,000 feet above sea level by the Incas who didn't know about the wheel and were a rather primitive people culturally.
