I'm a rival (Phillies) and I've crossed swords with Mets and their beloved fans on occassion. . .

But even the staunchest Met defender has to admit a problem with the version of this team the last few years. Solid lineup, good 3rd baseman, and yet they have died down the stretch in a manner as predictable as Kennedy killing a bottle of whiskey before 10. . .

The present team is loaded with solid players but there are cracks in the rotation. . .but for all their warts I keep waiting for this team to do more damage in September and October. . .

Good team, but they blew a HUGE lead in the last two weeks of the season. Jose Reyes was pretty mediocre the last two months of the year too. And their rotation is pretty thin. If they don't improve in the offseason, they won't get very far in '08.

Fern they don't call them the Amazin's for nothin. I'm a huge Mets fan and though they blew it yesterday in the series against the Evil Empire as they are wont to do more often then not, I'm fairly pleased with the excitement out at Shea these days. I've grown up loving this team threw the Bamburger years, Torre's early years, Torborg, Dallas Green and Art Howe and though they normally come up on the short end of the stick they have delievered some of the most memorable moments in baseball history. Their current team won't be competing for the series title this year but they're playing competitive ball. And with the young players like Wright and Reyes, the acquisitions of Martinez and Beltran I wouldn't be suprised if the Mets are back in the series next year or the year after if they plug a couple holes.

*****I left this post last year and wanted to once again comment on this current Mets team. Im literally horse from cheering in my living room last night and have broken my company's dress code to don full Mets attire at work today in jubilation of their first division championship in 18 years! Beyond winning this season- and my belief that they ARE the best team in baseball- I can't say enough about how great this team is to root for. For years the Mets overpaid for impassive at best (Eddie Murray, Bobby Bonilla) apathetic at worst (Alomar) talent that never played up to par. The 86 team was full over ripping characters who lived as hard as they played, were also a hell of a lot fun to watch and root for but they're off the field antics cost them a chance at a legacy. This team- this 2006 team- is full of good guys who love the game and respect the game. They all play hard and are coached well. This year has had its spectacular games: comebacks from 8 runs down and walk offs on numerous occasions. A couple downs- Wagners torturous blow save against the Yanks at Shea when he blew a 4-0 lead in the 9th- But it was nothing but exciting all year! I love this team! Reyes, Wright, Pedro, Beltran, Delgado, Valentin... all them! They're gonna do it this year!

To my mind, they represent the old Brooklyn Dodgers in that their fans don't necessarily expect instant gratification, and follow them more out of love of the game than demanding nothing less than winning the whole thing. In that regard, they resemble Cubs or Cardinals fans with unconditional love for their team, instead of the pre- 2004 pessimism of Red Sox fans ,or the mindless ego gratification and strange sense of validation that some local Yankee fans get with their team's often predictable success, or the knee- jerk phoniness and bandwagoneering of non-NYC area fans. Mixed success over the years: 2 Series winners and other good years mixed in with awful clubs, they tend to be either very good or extremely poor, seldom in the middle. Have made some solid moves lately that should restore them to the top of the pack in their division.

I don't see this team going anywhere soon. Yeah, they got manager Willie Randolph and Carlos Beltran, but so what! This is not a team that's loaded with proven veterans that'll get the team to the playoffs. ... And their fans are pathetic. They talk out of their asses when the Yanks come to Shea. It's all petty jealousy. ... Christ, every year these fans cheer on the Red Sox when they beat my Yanks.

I gave them 5 stars because they are my team and I love them to death, but the Mets ownership is the worst in baseball..Please Wilpons if you guys are reading this..Sell the team to some owners that would take a chance..I am a die hard Mets fan, but I envy a owner like George Steinbrenner...Go Mets!

The Mets suck... you would at least think, since they have the second highest payroll in the MLB, that they should be a halfway decent team. But, here they are, last place in the NL East. Go figure.

Steve Phillips, that purveyor of dead meat, should have been shown the door two seasons ago. Instead, the owners of the franchise gave him yet another vote of confidence and this knucklehead went out and acquired The Walking Wounded while letting go a few players who could have really helped this team if they were used properly. The Mets have a decent rotation, if Astascio is healthy, even though Glavine and Leiter have pitched below their capabilities this season. Trachsel is the ultimate hardluck pitcher, and he deserves much better than that already. Why Phillips picked up damaged and overweight goods like Vaughn is beyond me, and if Cedeno is so great, why didn't the franchise stick with him the first time around? Timo Perez is a decent little outfielder, but the Mets need more than that. On a positive note, Floyd turned out to be The Real Deal, Burnitz has shown some life following his truly miserable 2002 season, and both Tony Clark and Winningham have been pleasant surprises. However, Alomar is well past his prime, a major bust for the team, and Piazza should go over to the AL and DH to prolong his career. Benitez is a headcase who makes every relief outing an adventure. So, the 2003 Amazin's are short on pitching help, continue to be anemic on offense, and have one of the lamest GMs in baseball. Time for some new front office blood, because this team plays in perhaps the most competitive division in the game, and nobody's going anywhere.

With the second highest payroll in baseball you would think they should be able to win some games. Goes to show that money can't buy everything.

Top Ten Resons to Like the Mets: 1 - Mike Piazza is the greatest catcher of all time. 2 - They're not the Yankees. 3 - The Mets are consistantly an underdog team. 4 - They're not the Yankees. 5 - The Mets have played in three of the most exciting World Series in history. 6 - The Mets are dedicated to winning, but don't bankrupt small market teams by pushing the salary envelope ever further (coughstienbrennercough). 7 - When they do win the World Series, the fans actually appreciate what a tremenous accomplishment it is (coughyankeesfanscough). 8 - No one can accuse you of bandwaggoning. 9 - John Franco would cut off his left testlicle for the team. 10 - The coolest uniforms in baseball.

They are a last place team and they really did make a bit of a turnaround for a few years. Mets fans were jubilant after they got Burnitz, Vaughn, and Alomar over the off-season. That was before that it came to light they all three would to terribly for the Mets. They have one of the highest payrolls in baseball, but with no chemistry, the team sucks. They had a futile season and have no one to blame but themselves. I have to laugh at the biggest joke of the year.

Maybe 2001 is not the year, but they did get over the .500 mark. With a solid finish to the season, they should be en route to the Playoffs next year with a big name free-agent signing. Although, as I write this they still have a slight chance at the playoffs, but only a miracle, but hey..NY is full of miracles...think '73!!! Let's go Mets....UGOTTABELIEVE.....go AMAZINS

I don't like the Mets...but what I'm really here to say is that I don't like the fans. The Mets have a sorry excuse for fans. I think they are very immature and I'd be embarassed if I was up there. They try to be rowdy and throug things at players...especially the Atlanta Braves. Sorry that you Mets fans hate the Braves..but you'll have to get over it, because we will beat the Mets every year so brace yourselves. GO BRAVES!! Forget them skanky yankees!! And I'd also like to add, that the Mets fans need to just go ahead and back up off of John Rocker. They are just mad coz' they don't have a pitcher good like them. They tried...keyword here is try....to make him lose control at the games...but that didn't work because he just kept on striking those Mets out! Can't get much better than that!

every year no matter if the yankees win or not all I hear is wait till next year. When are all you Mets fans going to come to terms with your rooting for the wrong team. Its always were just one good left hander away or we gotta believe or lets go pets Oh sorry Mets. the Mets last won in 86 by a fluke they got killed by Houston and got lucky and they can kiss Bill Buckners bad knees and ass for giving them a second chance when the rocket should have put their lights out when he pitched game six as Red Sox. Now its OH we had such a great series it was so close and Jeter said we were the best team we ever played. What do you think he was going to say, the Mets suck and we all hate them of course not he's a pro. Do all of you really think you guys are better than the Braves who beat the hell out of the Mets everytime they face them and beat them what 12 times in 96 when the Yankees took their first in the greatest run of any team in the history of the game and maybe the best team of all time. Do you Mets fans really think you can even be spoken in the same sentence as this Yankee team. Losing in five in the best of seven no matter how you all want to put a spin on it is getting killed I don't care what the scores were, when history looks back on this series their not going to say the Mets almost won or wait till next year its going to say Yankees in five we all knew and so did you.

This was the greatest World Series in my life time (I am 32)! As a Mets fan I am extremely sad that they lost. Every game could have gone either way, even after Clemens dominated. I was lucky enough to go to games 1 and 3 and I have never experienced anything like it. Even after the Yankees had beaten the Mets in the 12th innings at 1:15 AM in game 1, I was shaking hands with Yankee fans who said that they were sorry, but what a great game it was! Jeter even said this was the best team they played in five years. This was a magical world series that I will never forget, I hope that it happens again, but it won't be the same as the "first" subway series (the first for millions who didn't see the games in the 40's and 50s). Look out Yankees, next year is payback!

With the exception of Bobby V, the Mets really are a pretty easy team to like this year. Their outfield right now is made up of three guys who don't make more than $1 million combined. They have likable (not to mention really good) infielders, particularly Edgardo Alfonzo. And, they have the best hitting catcher in baseball history, a guy who plays his heart out every night. Combine all of that with a strong pitching staff, led by Mike Hampton and Al Leiter in the starting rotation and John Franco out of the pen, and you've got a team which is pretty easy to root for and damned good on the field. Times have changed from the 80's Mets, among the most hated teams in baseball history.
