Hurricane Hazel hit near the South Carolina/North Carolina border back in 1954. It was a category 4 storm, which rarely hit that far north. It proceeded to cause damage inland through Virginia and Maryland and didn't stop until wreaking havoc in Canada. Before hitting the US it claimed over 1000 lives in Haiti. The rains that came with it killed 95 in the US and 81 in Canada.
