Andrew was one of just 3 storms in the 20th century to make landfall in the United States as a category 5 hurricane. It swept across south Florida and caused massive property damage. The destruction had several effects on the Florida economy, leading to the bankruptcy of several insurance companies, massive redevelopment, and a big hit to Florida agriculture. It also caused trouble in Louisiana after travelling across the Gulf of Mexico, but its damage there was less severe. It was definitely the worst hurricane in my time before the obvious Katrina disaster.

probably the worst hurricane damage in teh U.S. in at least the last 50 years that was caused entirely by winds (Andrew's peak surge hit a sparsely populated area of coastline, and at 17 feet is not that high for 165 mph winds; and there were very few instances if any of flooding) I was only 9 at the time but i remember seeing the damage on TV the next morning, and it truly looked as if a bomb was dropped on south Florida Andrew, in 2002, was reanalyzed, and was upgraded to a Category 5 ten years after the fact (the people that lived through it probably knew this already by then)

OK, let me set the record right. The Matecumbe Key, FL hurricane (no name) was the worst hurricane ever recorded with the third lowest pressure ever recorded at 26.35''. Also worst, if you count lives lost, was the Galveston, TX hurricane with 8,000-12,000 deaths. The second worst storm was Camille with the fourth lowest pressure ever recorded at 26.84'' and the highest wind speed for a tropical cyclone ever recorded at 190MPH sustained with gusts over 200MPH. The highest wind speed ever recorded on Earth was on Mt. Washington at 231MPH (previously, and possibly recently again, superceeded by wind speeds recorded in Antarctica near the U.S. scientific research station very near 230MPH.) The third worst hurricane ever was Andrew with a pressure of 27.23'' and the second highest hurricane wind speed ever at 165MPH with gusts just at 200MPH. Andrew remains the Most Costly hurricane ever with 22+ billion dollars in damage (some believe that hurricane Charley may actually now hold tha... Read more

Experiencing Hurricane Andrew for myself, I can attest to the devastation it brought on South Florida. It was rather chilling, what made it worse was that it was a night storm. It sounded like a freight-train was passing outside my house. When light broke, the results became increasingly evident; it was an unmitigated disaster. Cars were tossed about like toys, roofs were torn off houses en masse, concrete power lines were split in half. It was reported that wind gusts had exceeded 200 MPH! I believe it remains to date the most costly hurricane on record. It could have actually been worse, Andrew was headed straight towards Downtown Miami, but at the last minute it wobbled a little south to slam into South Miami. It was extremely devastating, but it would have been far more costly in life and limb had it gone into a more populated area. Indeed, South Dade is only now after 12 years beginning to recover from this storm.

Andrew was the worst experience that I have ever had. I lost my home and all my neigbors lost thier homes as well. I remember not being able to find my way around because landmark, street sign and evryones homes were gone or destroyed. It is amazing that we are still around to tell about it!!
