Ted kid lewis must be considered as the best pound for pound fighter this country ever produced,a fearless two fisted fighter who didn't like to take a backward step against agaist anyone. Born a weak child with hammer toes, his shuffle forward aggresive style brought him success both sides of the atlantic against flyweights to heavyweights.Considering both his longevity and ring record, the term overated cannot be used in the same breath as his name. The reason why he fought jack brittain so often was simply that they were both that good nobody else this side of middle weight wanted to fight either of them.

A great puncher, even kayoed heavyweights, but not much style. I've often felt he was overrated, although his series with Jack Britton is one of the greatest in boxing history.

Ted Kid Lewis(Gershon Mendeloff) was the first boxer to wear a mouthpiece and fought 282 times from 1909-1929,winning several British and Europeon titles from featherweight to middleweight. He also twice won the world welterweight title in a series of at least 20 fights with Jack Britton;the two disliked each other and refused to shake hands. There are several films available of Lewis, who fought during the same period as Benny Leonard. But style-wise the two couldn't be more different;for example, whereas Leonard snapped a jab like a modern boxer,Lewis-England's Benny Leonard would simply extend his left arm and leap in like a linebacker. Following his career,Lewis ran up some gambling debts and had some hard times. In 1931,he became the trainer of the Biff Boys, the bodyguards of Oswald Mosley, who came to be regarded as a British Nazi.Lewis's time with Mosley ended in 1932,when according to his son Morton, who wrote his father's biography(The Life and TImes of Ted Kid Lewis-Google.com--David Turner page--Ted Kid Lewis),Kid Lewis and son visited visited Mosely. After a brief discussion about Mosely's new politics,Lewis slapped Mosely and flattened two bodyguards and exited the office holding his son's hand. After a short walk down the street,Lewis returned to the office and flattened the two bodyguards standing outside Mosely' office;according to his son, four punches and four kayos.
