Love my Maltese dearly as a single lady living in a hi-rise. Got him at 7 months old, not socialized or potty trained. He has ruined my apt., barks at every little sound, costs me a fortune to have groomed, and tried to bite the mailman-(lawsuit people), nips at children, chases and barks at neighbors if he dares get into the condo hallway. I would never do it again. Yes, I did all the training-private and group, read all the books, watched all the shows. Once, I slipped on the floor and lay there crying. He just walked away. I think he knows darn right well what he is doing. I would not exactly call him stupid. VERY HIGH MAINTENANCE.

Cute companions for appartment dwellers or larger homes. They are enegetic, lovable, playfull, and gentle. Becasue of their sometimes high drives, caution should be exercised around children because they may nip or bite unless exposed to them at younger a young age. Unfortunately, you may find their constantly yapping an extremely annoying trait. With no under coat, these little dogs have minimal shed and require regular grooming and cleaning of their tear stains under the eyes.

I've two Maltese and they are just amazing. I was never fond on small dogs but adopted my first maltese and changed my mind completely. What a great dog, of course to each its own, and the maltese between grooming and attention require a lot of time, but its just so well worth it, my dogs are so well behaved, easy to train, quiet but playful and just easy going.

I absolutely love mine.  They aren't the dog for everyone though.  You have to be very commited to grooming or be willing to pay for regular professional grooming and you still have to brush, brush, brush inbetween appointments.  They NEED to be with their people, mine is always in my lap.  They are very smart and can learn lots of tricks, but they prefer to train you.

My brother's family Maltese dog was the best little dog I have ever seen. We all treated the dog like royalty. She was very, very, very, very intelligent(and an absolute sweetheart). She was born before my niece and nephew were born. My niece absolutely loved the dog from day one. My nephew was about eight years old before he adapted to her and then loved her. The dog was very rambunctious and extremely playful until she was about eight or nine. She loved to take walks. I remember when she was very young(puppy to three years old) when you could not say the word walk around her. If you did, she would get really, really excited and demand to be walked. You had to say w-a-l-k instead. Mitzi passed away August 4, 2005 due to kidney complications at the age of 16(would have been 17 Sept. 17, 2005 if she had lived). I sorely miss her!!! She will be very, very, hard to replace. I highly recommend finding a reputable breeder and get a Maltese Dog. You will not regret it!!!

Well... I have a yorkie, and they are so smart it is unbelievable. For the most part... Maltese Dogs have been completely DUMB in my presence of them.
