Smallpox was declared eradicated in the late 1970's, and as a result most people born since then (at least in the developed world) don't have the telltale scar on their shoulders from the vaccine. At that time the vaccine was determined more risky than the disease itself. Nevertheless, since there are some remaining concerns over terrorist use of smallpox as a biological agent, the vaccine stocks haven't completely gone away.3

Not obsolete and still very much necessary. That vaccine you got as a child? If that was more than 35-40 years ago it's no longer effective. That's right.. they were wrong about that.8

I accepted this addition to the list, but I question whether it's obsolete. There are still cases of polio in children however, and it would probably spread more widely if we didn't continue to vaccinate.4
