This song was big back in the day and so was Coolio. This movie really worked with Dangerous Minds and it had a great beat.

I agree....when I look back Coolio sucked.  I just didnt like him.  Alot of his songs that were popular got SO played out and became over-rated.

SO MUCH BETTER THAN AMISH PARADISE. I have the grammy's CD with this song on it. Love it. Used to sing it in the shower.

Not a big fan of rap, but I still tend to like a lot of Coolio's stuff.  It's a pretty good song, but everytime I hear it now I automatically think of the "Amish Paradise" spoof by Weird Al.

Gangsta's Paradise was one of the biggest rap hits to crossover into the pop charts in the 90's. The background singing had great emotion, and the lyrics were clean and meant something, unlike some other raps from this decade.

Rarely does a rap song rise to near epic proportions, and Coolio's "Gangsta's Paradise" does indeed reach for this goal. Coolio isn't the world's greatest vocalist by any stretch of the imagination, but with the able assistance of L.V. ("Large Variety") that facet is largely overcome. The song simply sounds big on a full symphonic scale as it rolls along carrying the listener with it. However, as is usual with the best crossover rap singles, the song relies on someone else's work, namely Stevie Wonder's "Pastime Paradise" as its base, which results in a loss of a star. "Gangsta's Paradise" charted in the U.S. for 36 weeks in 1995-6 (#1), and, as another comment noted, was parodied by Weird Al Yankovic as "Amish Paradise".

Good song with great lyrics. Good parody of this song by Weird Al also. Too bad Coolio didn't have a sense of humor about it.

I agree with kingguiness that Coolio's "Gangsta's Paradise" is one of the best rap songs to scale the top of the charts. It made effective use of a refrain from a Stevie Wonder song and transformed it into a powerfully catchy yet credible street anthem that worked on many levels. "Gangsta's Paradise" is also credited for making the Michelle Pfeiffer movie "Dangerous Minds" a big box office hit. The music video featured clips of her as an inner city school teacher alternated with Pfeiffer facing down Coolio the rapper.

Shockingly overrated crossover song that claims to expose life-in-the-inner-city as if we don't know what it's like. . .the song presents the illusion of a 'lack of choice' when choice and personal responsibility play a role at some level. . .it's very simple- city dangerous(?)=leave the city to raise kids and teach them to go to college. . .stay in dangerous city and refuse education?=might get shot/killed/suffer lower quality of life. . .there are your choices, deal with it. . .the song was a philosophical cop-out. . .
