The first Depeche Mode single to have major commercial success in the U.S. after "People Are People" (1985), "Personal Jesus" evidences the later maturity of the band and their progression from syth heavy music. In other words, this song can be credited with introducing DM to a generation that had either paid little attention prior or were too young to pay much attention earlier. Per AMG the lyrics were inspired by Elvis' relationship with Priscilla, but it's the song's groove and underlying bass and percussion that really makes the single into a classic. While "Personal Jesus" was released as a single in 1989, it was also included in 1990's full-length "Violator" and didn't chart in the States until that year (6 weeks, #28), which I suppose makes it a legitimate song on this list. As the other comments have stated, notable covers included those by Johnny Cash and Marilyn Manson. VIDEO

Awesome song! Good beat. Marilyn Manson made a cover of this song, but DM's is way better!

This is a great song--my favorite Depeche Mode song--but technically it's from 1989. It was released as a single first and then appeared on their 1990 album Violater.
kingguiness 07/07/2006
I thought this was from 1988 but I could be wrong. A true classic!
Jed1000 07/07/2006
Great hard-driving song from the quintessential electro-pop band of the 80s.. although this one is from the 1990 'Violator' CD. It's been covered a few times, even by the likes of Marilyn Manson.
Djahuti 07/07/2006
One of Depeche Modes good ones.I like the cover of it Johnny Cash did!
