After the funeral, ask when and where the buffet will be held

this is a bit touchy. i try and keep in mind that some people may have come from out of town or even states away. and it is not too horrible to wonder. at my mother's funeral some very nice friends were wonderful enough to offer a luncheon at the clubhouse in the mobile home park my mother lived in. we announced this and where it was to those who came to the funeral. i do know it is not unusual for someone friend, or church. to offer a place for those who are interested a place for them to eat. I have been to several funerals where food is offered at a church or elsewhere and it is almost always announced.

Far be it from me, ordinarily, to be turning down a little "scrub a dub " ( free food) but showing up uninvited to the reception afterward is beyond the pale.

I can easily remember my growling stomach at my father's funeral. On the drive home. . .I quietly and nervously inquired about a Burger-King sign. . .others in the car quickly chimed in about how hungry they were. It became a family memory on a tough day.

Food helps. Always. Unless you're a supermodel.

If you have to ask where the family is holding a reception, then it is quite possible that you didn't know because you weren't invited. The actual funeral is usually open to anybody who wants to come, but that doesn't mean everybody will be welcome with family and friends afterwards.

At a truly traditional Irish wake, you wouldn't have to ask because the buffet and bar would be before the funeral, and the guest of honor (the corpse) would be in attendance.

Sometimes with the casket used as a bar.

And given that a reception or buffet after a funeral or memorial service is far more common than not, the person asking likely assumed they missed the announcement. Certainly nothing to get offended about, unless they show up at the funeral with a napkin tucked in their collar and a plate in each hand.

You must be referring to the same individual who went to the reception but not the wedding when the deceased was married.

I had a friend who went to the great beyond and left a bequest of several thousand for a bash afterwards. That was when we all asked when the festivities started.
