Well if the church started to lose, they would burn him at the stake. It took the chruck approximately 300 years to admit Gallileo was correct. The earth DID relvove around the sun. Wrong about this and every other scientific fact. 1

Technically speaking, the Catholic Church at the time was more of a Ptolyemaic viewpoint whereas Galileo's POV on the Earth was more Biblical.

Just because the Earth is the center of God's universe doesn't necessarily mean that it is physically centered in the middle of all the planets. In fact, the Earth is next-to-the-center of the universe.

And yes, Galileo believed in God and to paraphrase him, he said that mathematics was the language of God because it is one of the keys to how the universe works.

It would be fun to watch. You'd have to give the astronomer the edge but for the handicap given the Pope in that he gets to use implements of torture to support his arguments.2

Pope Urban III: "God would not have created this magnificent Earth and the Men that walk on it, if he had no intention of placing it at the center of the Universe!"

Galileo: "If it is true that the Universe is made of rocks and hot gasses, then perhaps your head is the center of the Universe!"
