While it was an impressively mounted production and it seemed bold and controversial at the time, it looks pretty silly today. Charlie Sheen's voice over narrative contains some of the most purile observations on the horrors of war and the impact of Viet Nam on history. But the film was of an age when America was just feeling comfortable with the notion of talking about the war. I think that is what carried it to the top of the awards.
