 | oscargamblesfro (81) 08/08/2007 | I liked the more complex later Who of "Tommy,' "Who's Next" etc., but I really especially loved the early Who of tracks like this, "So Sad About Us," "Substitute," 'Disguises" "My Generation" the "Sell Out" album, "Happy Jack," "Naked Eye," "I Can't Explain" even more. The later stuff was often impressive, but I do prefer their pre 'Tommy' output for the most part. Tommy's very good, but in my opinion it's a tad overrated. There was something very honest about those influential and impressive tunes. The early Who were more like the Kinks than other titans of the British Invasion like the Beatles, Stones, Yardbirds or Animals-, in terms of both playing and especially songwriting- both The Who and the Kinks in those days wrote essentially working class, and sometimes very distinctly British, anthems that were nevertheless easy for a lot of young people around the globe to relate to. The Who could be ferocious or subtle, mellow or complex, but always incisive, evocative, and just so...I guess 'real' is the best word I can come up with, though it still doesn't suffice for what I'm trying to express. This is a melodic but quietly forceful early Who song, and an excellent one at that...
