I didn't think they were obsolete. When I go into different places, such as stores, I see them a lot, and people use them to communicate with their families when they go their different ways. It's a great way of locating one another.3

As walkie-talkies were originally developed for the military, I'm not sure that these things are quite obsolete for infantry (though I couldn't say for sure). I will say that back in my day, toy walkie-talkies were one of the best Christmas presents a young boy could get (ahh, simpler times). Since I'm assuming that these are still useful for recreational purposes and (as other comments have noted) the technology has simply switched to cellular, four stars for the walkie-talkie.4

Yes, the great big ones like a big telephone receiver were great. Now we have hand held radios, as numbah points out. I wonder if some wise ass will give Dick Cheney and Harry Whittingham a pair of them for Christmas. Hey, next time you guys go hunting . . .6

They still have some uses as we haven't yet covered the planet with cell phone towers.4

They now call them Nextel, and they're just as annoying as ever. Put it on mute, dufus...can't you see I'm trying to eat here...5

They have evolved. Now we have handheld radios with a couple of miles of range of the same size!4
