 | traderboy (27) 02/24/2006 | Hindsight being what it is, it's almost too easy to plunk at these dudes. Big in their native Canada (formed in Toronto in 1980) and the United States, but never caught on in Europe (too "hard-edged", evidently). Their first three (3) albums went platinum (SOMEBODY had to have been buying 'em), then they got bulldozed by the same "grunge" movement that thankfully destroyed everybody else. They belong in the Hall Of Shame almost exclusively due to their videos (ALL of them were ghastly, even for a medium that was in its infancy). The only nod I've ever been able to give to them has been "Working For The Weekend", a harmless clapper that was no worse than anything else being played at the time (it's also the only video I got a kick out of, trying to figure out when the embolism in drummer Matt Frenette's head would burst). Bassist Scott Smith (a David Letterman lookalike) was swept off a boat by high waves out in California during 2000 and drowned, and singer Mike Reno's put on a few hundred pounds since his heydays (but they're still touring county fairs and showing up on 80s radio). Loverboy.....shamefully marketed? Yes. Overtly commercial? Yes. Still audibly recognizable? C'mon, admit it.....
