It was all an accumulation and it just waited for someone to realise the statistics of the conflict. Grant said "the south do not have enough army" and even though it could be argued he lost the battle of the Wilderness and some following clashes he always kept in mind that he could afford the losses in men and material whereas the south could not. The south may have had better leaders and its men may have been better soldiers but the supply was not limitless.
