Brilliant film, chilling in its vision.

One of the best films, let alone anti war films, ever made.

Kirk Douglas is masterful, and the supporting cast is merely brilliant.

Kubrick's direction is taut and the clarity of his vision has never been better.

Should the listing suggest filing opinions regarding the power of movies to convey an anti-war message, a clarification for personal ratings would be in order: the intentions and narrative dexterity of the filmmakers in conveying that message count foremost, as some movies, less cinematic than others, may rate higher than classic productions. According to this premise of combining artistry to anti-war sentiments, 'Lawrence of Arabia', 'Ghandi', or 'Doctor Zhivago', etc., would be less accomplished than movies which, for whatever reason (budgetary, miscasting, etc.) were rather routinely made or somewhat flawed such as 'Hair', 'Go Tell the Spartans', 'Under Fire', 'Cold Mountain', 'Salvador', 'Red Badge of Courage', or 'Sophie's Choice'. Fortunately, some movies are accomplished in both skillful moviemaking and in their humanistic impact. 'Paths of Glory' is one of them; so are 'Full Metal Jacket', 'Schindler's List', 'The Bridge (Die Brucke)', 'Dr. Strangelove...', 'Stalag 17', 'Grande Illusion', 'Ballad of a Soldier', and, among others, 'Life is Beautiful'.

Is it wrong to say that Kubrick is the Dylan of movie making? This is one of his trio or so of anti-war films which include Paths of Glory, Dr. Strangelove and Full Metal Jacket. He does this with impressive visuals and intelligent writing, as in most of his films. He is the master of many genres, and this is very much his most impressive ones. After all this time, I really don't have to justify my decision any more then to just simply say, 'Its Kubrick'.

One of Stan Kubrick's first pieces, this was a great film based on the novel by Humphrey Cobb. Basically about scapegoating for war morale, and the injustices of military due process when the larger considerations interfere with justice for individuals. Great performances by Kirk Douglas and some lesser knowns.
