My first job wasn't really a job.....I volunteered at the animal shelter during summers. I didn't get paid. My reward was taking care of the animals.

MIne was at an amusement park for $2.25,and even though that was around 25 years ago,it still was below minimum wage.(They got away with substandard pay because it was a "seasonal" job.)

my job was way back in the mid 1970s. it was at the now gone , Burger Chef. I made a whole $2.00 an hour. you work your buns off during rush hours. and I smelled greasy when I got home. for first jobs this is about average, since I could think of worse jobs. at fast food restaurants it is true you did not get tips. and you could put up with a lot of heat, from understaffed hours to nasty customers. but I made it through and it bought me my very first car. a 1972 dodge Dart Swinger.

SZ: I certainly agree with avoiding the food industry, especially without tips for incentive, but I wouldn't recommend this area in general unless you know the area or the patrons are more likely to tip at the place that you're interested in working at. The only time I would consider working at a restaurant now, is at a hotel during tourist season. The tourists here tip FAR better than the locals, so having a job in the tourist industry (at leats in this area) serves you fairly well, at least for a couple of months. BTW though---my second job was at McDonald's, this is why I ALSO don't recommend the food industry too often

My first job was picking strawberries. We we paid by the pound instead of by hour, which enticed some kids to put rocks into their baskets before bringing them up to the scales.

Stop whining! My first job was as a bun toaster at McDonalds when I was 15. Every day I went home I had singed fingers from the ovens. Note to minimum wage job seekers: Avoid employment involving food unless tips are involved.
