i have had this dream since childhood. i fall from a great height, i am terrified yet wake up before i land. As I got older the dream changed a little and i would find myself going to the edge of some place high off the ground, and stepping off! I wonder if those little trips that make you jump as you fall asleep are related to this?

I've had more flying dreams than falling. In the falling ones,I always wake up before impact.

I've had a few of these, maybe not as many as others, but it's not a very good feeling. There's no other way to describe this. And then when I wake up, it's, whew, what a relief to know it was just a dream.

I've dreamed about falling quite a bit....more so off my bed, even though I didn't fall off of it.

I  am pretty sure i have dreamed of this. I think I am constantly worrying about things so falling dreams would not be unusual cannot recall specifically but remember waking suddenly after dreaming feeling a bit panicked then relieved.

More often than I care to. Most of the time I'm having a nice, normal dream, then suddenly I step off a curb and fall into a canyon. It really sucks when you wake up with that falling feeling. If the description of this one is accurate, I guess it would make sense why I have so many of these. My current situation can get pretty overwhelming and I do feel powerless as times, so maybe there's a little something to this one.

Once I dreamed I was really upset, and I just stopped caring, so... for fun, for some reason, I climbed over a railing in my house, 40 feet above my black marble floor, and swung there, then I began to slip, and soon after that, I fell because no one would help me back up..

I used to have this dream when I was a kid, but I never hit the floor because I started flying just a second before, then when I was safe,I woke up

I do have recurring nightmares where I am trapped either atop a cliff or on the roof of a high rise- and there is nowhere to go but down. It always ends with me saying a little prayer, and then I jump off into oblivion (and the dream ends before I hit the ground). Admittedly, I do have a general fear of heights, so I always wake up in a cold sweat when I do.

I have this type of dream/nightmare quite a bit and I HATE them! Just guessing, but I suspect I continue to have them because the older I get the more afraid of heights I become and I must be trying to work through that fear in my dreams. But even more annoying, in some ways, than the terrifying feeling they bring is waking up with a kind of jolt and almost never failing to bite my tongue in the process. Ouch!

Several years ago, I dreamt that I was riding some ATV three-wheeler off of a cliff and I woke up to that feeling in your stomach (y'know...that feeling you get when you go down a roller coaster). I've also had dreams where I was riding in a car and the road was so high and steep that it was like going down a rollercoaster when driving down the road.

Usually means a fear of failure, a loss of control or a fear of losing honor. Hey, I'm not judging, I'm just opining.

Frank: I'm just glad I'm not the only one. If I fall asleep with people around, they swear I have muscle spasms or something. Anyway, I've actually woken up, swearing that I'm falling, and jerked so hard that I've actually pulled muscles. I've also fallen out of bed, although not since I was about 8 or 9 years old. Sometimes, I don't even know if I was actually dreaming about falling (as I don't always remember), but wonder if it's just my vertigo that makes me so dizzy that subconciously, I thought I was falling in my dreams. Either way, it's not a good way to start my day.

More often than not, this happens when I fall asleep during the day. Once when I was in high school, I fell asleep in class and woke up so suddenly, and thinking I was really falling, I let out a yell. It was pretty embarrassing.

Every night just as I lose consciousness I get the sensation of falling and my body reacts with a jerk. My wife asks me where I fell and I usually respond in my semi-conscious state, "I stepped off the curb" or "I wiped-out skiing", or "I was climbing and fell" then poof, I'm asleep.
