Sufjan is (slowly) growing on me as well. A friend of mine burned Greeting from Michigan and Come on Feel the Illinoise for me, and they've been getting a lot of play as background noise while I work (it's that kind of music).

At first I thought he was a bit too mellow, and a bit too experimental... but little by little I'm starting to like his sound. Flint for the Unemployed is probably a good track to start out with for the uninitiated - it has a nice soothing sound, with an unexpected trumpet solo at the end. Very nice.

Sufjan is growing on me.

I had heard great things about his music, and I was intrigued to read that there were actually contemporary Christian music CDs that served a purpose beyond improvised beermats, so I downloaded his latest two albums (dedicated to the states of Michigan and Illinois - he has said he wants to do a record for each of the 50 states).

At the first pass, I found his vocals too tremulous and reedy at times to properly carry some of the more complex arrangements in his songs, but after several listenings, it does somehow click.

The music is rich and imaginative and the writing is quirky, sensitive, intelligent and very lyrical.

And you cannot help but like someone who pens a line like "Oh the glory that the Lord has made and the complications you could do without when I kissed you on the mouth".

So give him a try everyone. I recommend the "Illinoise" album, and in particular "Casimir Pulaski Day".
