Along with Steve Winwood, I think Felix Cavilaire was the first credible white soul singer.3

Did you know that this group actually demanded that a black act appear on the bill at each of its concerts? They defied racism, even in the south, where it costed them more than just a few bookings. Last verse of " People Got To Be Free "...
Shout it from the mountain on out to the sea (out to the sea)
No two ways about it, people have to be free
Ask me my opinion, my opinion will be
Nat'ral situation for a man to be free
Yep, I loved them.

Great run of hits. Felix Cavilaire was a gifted singer-songwriter.4

a band that started out as a hard RnB outfit and recorded their first hit, "I Ain't Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore" in 1965. the group topped the U.S charts in April 1966 with "Good Lovin'" which has become a staple on oldies stations. the group followed a more commercial path than their hard rnb roots while releasing some decent tunes along the way.1

Great blue-eyed soul band that for some reason (North/East coast bias?) leapfrogged many much more deserving acts into the rock hall-of-fame (Skynyrd, Sabbath, Jethro Tull...) Don't get me wrong now, these guys had a boatload of great songs ("Good Lovin", "Groovin'", "You Better Run", etc) and I was happy to them honored, but the 'Hall' is really in bad hands as far as the selection committee is concerned. I caught Felix Cavaliere a couple of years ago at a free show and he rocked the house. The girls used to play, "People Got to be Free" (Or whatever it's called) every Friday during the last half hour of class when the teacher used to let us hear music when I was in sixth grade. They had a lot of good songs that would get the girls up and moving. And, you've got to love a band, who can do that!2
