he was a hero to his townfolk friends. he was just an average joe who gave so much of himself so others could have a better life. there were times he said "what about me, when is it my turn?" yet he continued to gave up his own dreams to stay in town and run the old building and loan so others could have a home not run by the evil Mr. Potter.when George felt he had not given anything worthwhile in his life, clarence the angel showed him what life would be like if he had not been born. I liked the message from this movie that "people matter" George was just a average person but he was a hero to those who knew him.
