Love his work on the early Pat Boone albums. A guitarist with a lot of acne in his soul and a very Milky technique!

He was just good but he was so experimental in the studio where he could get a lot of his effects, consequently Boston suffered for it when they would try to perform the same songs live.He was a better inventor than a guitar player.

I think Tom Scholz from Boston is a good guitarist. Yes, someone wrote here that he's a good electrician. He has a Masters from MIT in engineering or something.....but anyway, the hooks are good and unmistakable.

One of the inescapable truths of life is that Boston was at the forefont of one of the most despicably bland musical genres evah...corporate AOR/FM rock. As the band leader and principal songwriter Scholz must take a fair share of the blame for foisting this vile glossy cack on the planet. It's hard to tell how skillful a guitarist he is because every single Boston song has been over-engineered to death. I'll give him 3 stars for being a good electrician

I have no idea why Scholz is so low. Considering how big Boston are, he's actually pretty underrated, having penned some amazing songs, and some brilliant solos. A very, very skilled guitarist indeed.

Tom did more than anyone I can think of to teach the world how great an electric guitar could sound.  His development of numerous commercial devices, particularly the Rockman and Power Soak, had a huge impact on guitar electronics.  Everyone already knew how great a Marshall amp sounded cranked up to 10 but the result was usually impractical and often un-recordable. These devices offered a solution.

His electronic and production wizardry is legendary.  Whether his music is "over produced" is the subject of some debate and he certainly labored like no else to produce an album.  Though a solid guitarist who wrote many memorable riffs, his fret work has been somewhat overshadowed by his accomplishments as a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, organist and all-around technical guru.  In spite of all his pioneering electronics, is music is surprisingly organic and "musical" which, I believe, is Tom's guiding principle.

Regarding the comment by "Franks Wild Years", I fail to see how it's fair to characterize Tom as a "self-indulgent over-the-top soloist".  Only 1 or 2 of his solos could ever be described this way.  Not exactly a defining characteristic considering the 5 albums he's produced.  Otherwise, Tom's solos are nearly always deeply rooted in the melody, always support the song and rarely exceeded 30 seconds in length.

If the category was most self-indulgent over-the-top soloist with a glossy-over-processed sound, I'd rate him much higher.

Has a great signature sound both recorded and live. In addition to being an awesome guitarist, can also play multiple instruments, writes and produces his own music, and even builds all amplifiers and sound equipment used on stage and in the recording studio. Incredible artist.
