UPDATE: Victor is a Peace Corps alumni, and a precinct captain for Obama.... Original comment: Hahahahahahahaha...... Sorry about that. I was thinking about my former career as a political aide and speechwriter.

To me this is a no-brainer. Not only is it Biblical, it's just common sense. A person should never accuse somebody else of something without knowing all the facts. It is pretty easy to make a quick judgment, and we have all done it, but it doesn't make it right.

I believe this commandment could more accurately be summed up as "don't lie." Most of the commandments are about theft -- this one forbids theft of the truth.

Seems pretty tame for a commandment.

Why not? It keeps me out of trouble. Who cares about the other person as long as I am OK? And down we go...

This happens allot on RIA and in the world!!!! I try my best but unfortunately pre-conceived ideas always sneak in and I fail up!!! I believe we have to be very careful today because people are able to convince people so easily, especially through the media!!! Stop, think and look at both sides before you say a thing. If you can't, then say NOTHING. Oh and DON’T speed read, you may miss the point. (Especially on RIA.)

if gossip is included with that yes! i hate to say this but some of the worst judgemental gossips i know go to church and call themselves christians.of course other people are nasty gossips too. it is cruel to accuse and gossip, pass judgement especially using only the bible passages that seem to give them "permission to judge" one of the nastiest gossipy accusers on my block goes to church every week. she is the first one to spread nasty gossip about others. when she found out our youngest child had developemental disabilities, she told her grandchildren to refuse to speak to us and lead the way to snub us and encouage others to stay away from our family. i Know which church she attends and have thought seriously of calling her pastor and suggesting doing a sermon of how evil it is to gossip. of course even if this happened she would not think the sermon was about her. witch. anyway. this is a good commandment too bad more do not follow it.it is one of the most easily broken.

Yes, some people do include not lying, period. You are right. It's lying about someone. And, yes, all people, excluding Jesus have lied at some point in their life. Thank God for His grace.

-- What this commandment means/application -- This command meant that you shouldn't speak against your neighbour as to damage their reputation if it was a false accusation. Now days, this command is also interpreted that you should not lie period! You are lying even if you say to someone who has just rang, 'I'm in the shower' but you are not. Lying is saying something which isn't true and it is something we should not do. God is truth and He detests unwarranted deception. This command also deals with gossip. That's what gossip and slander sometimes is: saying false things against your neighbour as to damage their reputation. We should be careful how we talk about other people. -- How is society at obeying this command? -- With all the scams going on, the fact that the average person lies everyday and there is not one person who has never told a lie in their whole lives (except for Jesus), well we are going pretty terrible at this too. We are so false. We tell people we don't... Read more
