England is quite possibly my favorite country to visit. Ok, no two ways about it, England is number 1 on my list. ive been there four or five times, and each time I get to see more and more of this wonderful country. Sure it costs a lot for a visit, but it is certainly worth it. And the food is a lot better than advertised. One truthful stereotype - the lack of a decent dentist. But hey, all countries have their faults.

England is a very nice place. Awseome attractions. The only thing I didn't like is that one moment, it is sunny and warm and the next moment, it is freezing cold and pouring rain. See what I mean

Apart from the fact that the native cuisine is atrocious, and the coffee tastes like it was drained off a corpse, this is a rewarding place for the traveller.  London is vibrant, exciting and impossible to fully explore in a lifetime, and places like the Cornish coast, the Yorkshire moors, and the Borderlands are magnificent.  Many of the major cities are industrial hells, but the smaller towns and villages are often jewels.

It is expensive, granted, but its worth it.

I want to go here again.  Not too hot, not too cold.  Temperatures in the summer rarely get over 75 F (24 C) or so I hear.  I also like how it rains alot too.   Definately a place to consider for future trips.  I didn't get a chance to explore the country whereas we stayed in suburban London.  Food is alright too.

"God Save The Queen"

God save the queen
The fascist regime
They made you a moron
Potential H-bomb

God save the queen
She ain't no human being
There is no future
In England's dreaming

Don't be told what you want
Don't be told what you need
There's no future, no future,
No future for you

God save the queen
We mean it man
We love our queen
God saves

God save the queen
'Cause tourists are money
And our figurehead
Is not what she seems

Oh God save history
God save your mad parade
Oh Lord God have mercy
All crimes are paid

When there's no future
How can there be sin
We're the flowers in the dustbin
We're the poison in your human machine
We're the future, your future

God save the queen
We mean it man
We love our queen
God saves

God save the queen
We mean it man
And there is no future
In England's dreaming

No future, no future,
No future for you
No future, no future,
No future for me

No future, no future,
No future for you
No future, no future
For you...

You could spend weeks (or months) in London and not see all the gems of the city. . .but England offers more for the lucky traveller- there are picturesque small towns that can be visited by rail. . .with the right guide and weather permitting (always dicey in England) one can have an outstanding visit. . .

I never thought I would ever call myself an Anglophile--if only because most Americans who are Anglophiles are elitest snobs: you know, the kind who blindly worship the monarchy and aristocracy while believing that those of Anglo-Saxon heritage are God's gift to mankind, etc. etc. etc. This all changed for me after 1994 when I began graduate (in UK, postgraduate) study. Yes, England has a queen, people enjoy their afternoon teas, fish-n-chips are still flourishing, good manners are still practiced, their ancient universities are still great, if not greatest (OK, I'm a wee bit biased here...) and they still have the undisputably BEST library in the world, the British Library. And yes, the English were still reserved.

But I soon realized there was far beneath the surface. It didn't take long of me to realize that they were OVERALL less racist, less judgmental of relationships (whether hetero- or homosexual), more egalitarian, and more environmentally conscious than Americans: or at least among the relatively well-educated. I was pleasantly surprised to see far more mixed couples over there than in the US (especially black and white couples)--and just as surprised that NO stranger ever came up to me to ask the intrusive question, "Are you Chinese or Japanese" (like it's anyone's fucking business!). Not least, I was happy to receive more professional opportunities than in my own nation because academics there didn't hastily assume that English was not my first language. (Definitely not like the morons who ask me loudly, "DO YOU SPEAK ENGLISH?") And finally, it was comforting to be able to go into a hospital and not worry that I didn't have the right insurance (was nearly turned away here in my own city in IL!).

I was sad to leave in 2001 after finishing my degree and a year of teaching. Was it paradise? Well, no. No nation can ever be perfect. There, food, clothes, and housing were--and are probably still expensive. But it sure comes close to la creme de la creme with a canny combination of tradition and progress. So yes, RULE BRITANNIA!

Well this is going to be my 100th review and I think it would be right to comment on my Homeland.

There is allot of good and unfortunately allot of bad I can say about this nation we call England!!!

The biggest problem with England is the constant thought our government tries to install; That we can do no better unless we are not part of Europe. Sorry Blair, WRONG; We have thrived very well without the EU. We are not a crime filled place as some would have you believe, but we do have our fair share of crime. We are a country that thinks our History is good, sorry fellow citizens.: Most of our history consist of raping and pillaging other peoples land and then forcing our views on them - Not something to be proud of!!! Many perceive the English as snobs , yes and no! We do have an air about us that permeates snobbery, but the average Joe hates this and wants people to know that is not true. Before you judge, maybe talk with a local in the PUB and you may see things a little different. I love and miss the English country side, but in no way miss the Rain!!!! I love the architecture of London and England but dont necessary like why some of the buildings are there I.E. Marble Arch. I hate the problem with Immigration and feel that if we put in as much effort as we do with Iraq: Then maybe we would not have a problem and stand up against France, who keeps offloading immigrants. My view on the English government is that they are a bunch of quivering followers and we no longer have a back bone to stand up for ourselves. I am very glad for the freedom the UK has and I respect and love all the Men and women that died to give us freedom, a freedom most in this world do not have. I would also say that I'm proud of all our men and women serving in the forces, they still have a very high standard that is still respected around the world. I love the Union Jack and Im very proud of it (how it was put together and the reasons why we fly the flag.)and how it came about. Im not proud of the years of oppression we have given to many countries. I do love what my country has stood for in the past and Im glad I was born there. But I would say Im not over impressed with how my country is turning out!

I live here and have to say Dr Entropy here has nailed it bang on the head. It's all deteriorated fast since Blair came to power although the slide really started after the end of WW2 and began to accelerate after joining the useless EU. The general behaviour of people is pretty bad and getting worse whether it's rude drivers and grumpy shop assistants at the softer end of things or vicious teenage hooligans (known here as chavs), the increasing numbers of illegal immigrants and the spiralling out of control booze culture at the nastier end. Then again, is there any country now that isn't ridden with criminality of all shades, materialism, lack of spiritual values, corruption etc. It's all a tad depressing really. Where I live is a beautiful part of the country (Cotswolds) but if only we could deport all the chavs and other underclasses to a remote atoll and nuke it.

I just came back from the UK (mostly Cornwall & London) last month and was dismayed at how badly things have deteriorated there. Crime is out of control, the credit-fueled boom recklessly encouraged by Gordon Brown has burned out (leaving behind a ton of bankrupts and a enormous load of white-elephant commercial/residential development; I was disgusted to see some of the most beautiful beaches in Devon & Cornwall effectively destroyed by speculative crap...in just the last 5 years!). Worst of all, New labor under Blair has become a caricature of the GOP under Bush(When a friend of mine predicted this 5 years ago, I dismissed it as liberal paranoia-but it's undeniable now). Now Blair's legacy to the UK will be: 1. Joining Bush in the doomed-from-the-start Iraqi quagmire 2. Rows and rows of hideous suburban development a-la-Houston all across the once-beautiful English countryside 3. Plenty of casinos where fools can gamble away their hard-earned dole money 4. Pubs open all night, so fools can spend what's left of their money on booze. 5. Londonistan, fugitive terrorist capital of the world. Go Blair Go! The North sea oil and gas running out faster than expected, and wind farms are not a solution (unfortunately, they may not be a solution, short of going back to coal, if there's any still left). The UK is going to become an even more dysfunctional place in the coming years, especially if continued terror attacks scare the tax-payers away. Most disturbing of all (and this is at least one thing Blair/New Labor aren't to blame for, directly is the general decline in trust and 'coziness' England is an increasingly overcrowded, jealous, resentful country (as American-style McMansions, cars and sprawl become more popular...unfortunately, there's simply not enough room in England for people to live an American lifestyle...it's not a matter of ideology, it's a matter of *space*). Most alarming of all, the loutish behavior of the so-called 'working' classes (you can recognize them easily: anyone who is male, drunk, tattooed, loud, obnoxious, mentally ill and unemployed qualifies) is now spreading to the middle classes and even the countryside. I hope England gets better, though I fear it will get worse.

Contrary to the movies and BBC, the Brits are Ugly Brutish People... especially the women! The native food is horrendous. The place is cold and damp, and the only redeeming value is that they have some culture (compared to Americans). Although, even this is quickly lost to the fact that they are trying soooo hard to emulate the USA.

Never been here, but based on Aussie food, which is pretty close to English, I gotta admit, if you're from America or any other country, you're going to be in for a rude awakening. This country needs a kitchen intervention, big time! I can't believe in this age of cookbooks and mass exportation of American culture, that a people could suck at cooking so much! A word of warning to American visitors and most other people accustomed to decent food: BRING ENOUGH SNACKS FROM HOME AS YOU CAN! Not chocolates, those are nice there though. You will not believe the crap you'll find in the potato chip aisles, the soup aisles and most other ones. I was born on a former British colony in the Caribbean, but I guess our black cooking and our close connections with America have improved the cuisine tremendously. Culture shock, ha, talk about cuisine shock!

Lojack, again it was the British empire and not the english empire. Has its share of castles and things to see and do, but you do have to put up with some of the people. The further south you go the ruder they get. Also part of the United Kingdom but they seem to get way more attention then Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the rest of the U.K.

Did some loony say Scotland and Wales are part of England? That person was obviously asleep during geography lessons (or any lessons I suspect). Fick or wot? Anyway, Britain can be very nice and the countryside is often very beautiful. There are good rstaurants to be be found too if you know where to look. No one in their right mind would exist on the stodgy pies and mushy peas that some poor misguided fools call food. One day, with Jamie Oliver's help, Britain may start eating better. More fruit and veg and less flesh is the way. Clean soul, clean bowel. I am a Londoner living in the south west.

It is a country of snooty people, but I don't understand the reason. The only 2 universal men they have had were Newton and Shakespeare (whose real origin is still mysterious). The two greatest civilisation of Europe are France and Germany, not certainly Britain. Ridiculous CapAnson when he says that Britain was good to support USA in the war against terror. Naaaaaa. Don't joke and don't look CNN. It is only imperialism. Britain has lost his empire, but USA took over it. The world will be better when AngloSaxon people will be at their home and not to break world's testicle with their mission of civilisation.

My home, always has been and always will be. Amazing history. Our food may not be the best on the planet, but where else can you get a decent cup of Earl Grey Tea, Baked Beans and Maltesers? We have the Houses of Paliament, The Tower of London, The River Thames, The London Eye and Big Ben to name but a few. We have some of the most beautiful country-sides. What I love most about England is the weather. It's so unpredictable. We can have four seasons in one day, the coldest winters and this gives enough room to look forward to the occasional hot summers.

The English are not, however, known for their cooking, so (though I thought it was ok), you may want to avoid bangers and mash and whatnot. Things are also very expensive in London. Still, certain worth seeing. I hope to go again soon!

Look at this... an island bravely defended from invaders throughout the centuries, CastleBee * England isn't an island - never has been. Britain is the island's name! Don't hear about them much at the Olympics, Rusty * You never will - there isn't an England in the Olympics! It's the British team in the Olympics! I have been to many places, and Britain is really the worst of them all., SurrenderMonkey * This topic is about England - not Britain! The best places... the hills of the lake district Pennines and Scotland, lordfoulbowel * This topic is about England not Scotland! I think that some people need to realize that England has been the closest ally of the US since WW1, BIGBABY * No that's Britain! It wasn't just English people who died in 9/11. England has supported us in all ways ever since 9-11. Great country, Go Blair! BIGBABY * It's Britain that's supported you. Go Blair? Blair isn't even English! ANSGARD Scotland is not better actually. If you really are Italian you wouldn't even understand their accents. * Stereotypical rubbish - I assume everyone in England talks like David Beckham and has large tattoo's on their neck? Close your eyes and dream of England. From the buzzing metropolis that is London with its palaces, theatres, parks, the River Thames, London Eye, fashio and internatinal cuisine and 500 spoken languages... a history going back hundreds of years to the broad plains of Salisbury and the mystical Stonehenge to the ancient walled Roman and Viking city of York. Or there's the Peak District full of wild heather and running streams and old villages to the Lake District with it's rolling green hills and freshwater lakes to Northumberland on the rocky northeast coast where Christianity first landed - the ancient monastries. Or the rugged cliffs and sheer drops of the north Devon coast or the ancient mystical homeland of King Arthur - Cornwall - with it's rocky cliff tops and the ancient ruins of Tintagel. The flat fens and wheatfields of Norfolk, the white cliffs of Dover, the university cities of Oxford and Cambridge with their many spires and ancient seats of learning, the spectacular New Forest and Sherwood Forest of Robin Hood fame, or the Georgian splendour of the ancient city of Bath, vibrant reborn cities of Newcastle, Liverpool, Manchester, Sheffield, Leeds, Nottingham, Bristol, Birmingham....., long winding sleepy canals, HadriansWall - the northern most boundary of the Roman Empire, the county of Kent - the garden of England - with thatched roofed villages and climbing roses.... Close your eyes and think of England

What is *with* these bad teeth and I hate the monarchy lunatics? Firstly, we really don't have bad teeth. I wore a brace for 18 months and now they're fine, thanks very much. As for the monarchy, perhaps some people are just a little bit jealous? Could it be that having a constiutional monarchy without much power of its own is a little better than a monkey-brained idiot as both political leader *and* figurehead (i.e. Bush)?? Yup! This is the greatest nation on the planet, without a doubt about it. Hence our immigration problem, mainly caused by Ozzies desperate to get here and make music (Valance, Minogue) and then they stay. Many famous movie stars and musicians make their homes here or buy second homes. London is a beautiful city at its heart, with the London eye providing an excellent viewpoint from which to see Big Ben, the skyscrapers around Canary Wharf, Hyde Park and the arch of the new Wembley Stadium, the best stadium ever!! We read more than anyone else because we're more intelligent than anyone else. We're a literate, cultured democracy with 3 main political parties (not 2) and unbiased television, unlike the US. We have digital TV and digital radio, and are a major player in the European space program, having built many of the experiments on the joint US-European Cassini-Huygens probe. We have extremely low unemployment, low CO2 emissions and green hills. And great teeth!
