Looks like China has been lying out the wazoo about its economic slowdown. I'm shocked, SHOCKED I tell you. The NY Times has an interesting article HERE.

China is an incredibly interesting, rapidly changing, diverse nation. They do have their fair share of problems though: political repression, pollution, desertification in the North, an economy which is presently overheating. Nevertheless, over the long term, they will be one of the main trend-setters in the next century. If they don't suffer some sort of calamity in the process. What's interesting historically about China is the fact that they go through periods of greater trade and economic openness and periods of extreme isolationism. This has been the case for over 2,000 years. They have since 1979 been emerging from an isolationist cycle which commenced when Mao took over in 1949. Since then, they have rapidly integrated into the global world order, changing the face of this nation and the world. Politically, China remains communist in orientation. They have tight controls over the flow of information, little opportunity for activism, and practically no dissent. The... Read more

China is a hard country to rate. On one hand it is home to some of the most spectacular sights on Earth - from the astonishing modern skylines of Shanghai and Hong Kong to the imperial grandeur of the Forbidden City, the Great Wall and the Terracotta Army and to the amazing natural beauty of the Himalayas, the Mongolian grasslands and the jungle-clad slopes of Yunnan. But on the other hand the stark reality is that most of the country is scarred by hideous outdated industrial complexes and most of the cities, away from the glistening futuristic skylines are pits of terrible poverty and filth. China's highlights outshine almost any country on Earth, but they are islands in a very bleak sea.

I wouldn't mind traveling to China or any other country, but I would want to do a lot of investigating about any country before I made the trip.

The Chinese government has to be one of the very worst in the history of the world, ever since the days of the appalling Mao regime. Just look at the policy of how thousands of female babies are 'hidden' away and left to die, the horrific persecution of Tibetans and other minorities, the terrible destruction the environment and the slaughter of wildlife. Then there's the general 'superior' attitude of most people there to non-Chinese. As others here have posted, what instills fear in me, far more than Al Quaeda, is the emergence of China is its emergence as a political and military superpower in addition to its economic might. Its all very alarming.

The government is full of incompitent people. They have a rabies problem so they go and slaughter every dog within three miles. You are either given the choice to slaughter your pet yourself or someone will come and beat it to death for you...just makes their image that much worse.

I've met some Chinese people who I have gotten along with very well. My problem is with the communist government. Citizens are tortured and there is terrible religious persecution.

Communist countries are the worst! The people there have to live on a dollar a day. Check out my Japan rating, basically tells my opinion about China.

Everybody better get ready because a billion screaming Chinamen are going to come for us soon. It's only a matter of time. The Soviets were communists but we realize now that it only ever was a thin ideology for them, their desires in reality were little different from the West. The Chinese government thoroughly embraces Communism to the point of dogma despite the free market influences in their economy. They understand that the best way to hurt the West is not to attack them militarily. It is to hit them in the wallet. The West covets China as a huge consumer base for their products. China knows that if they cut that income off the West will suffer. They know that the West covets it's material wealth, it's "things", which is why they acquired the home and office portion of IBM for a ridiculous amount of money. Every PC, every laptop from IBM is now made exclusively in China (by Lenovo, the friendly name of the Chinese company that bought the division, who also make the so... Read more

The food is good, so they get credit. But, they are a ruthless communist dictatorship who forces kids at age 4 to work eight hour shifts. They wont give Tibet its independance. UPDATE- China is, has been, and always will be completely worthless.

China will never invade Taiwan.. they have vitually no Navy. The women run the gamut from gorgeous to skanky..as opposed to Japanese women who are fairly uniformly somewhat-better than average.

oh china. im conflicted on you. first of all your government sucks major donkey nuts, what with the systematic destruction of tibetan culture and your more than prominent practice of slave labor (mainly for nike and various toy and textile compaines) and your willingness to accept the US's outsourced labor. but then you have beautiful 5,000 year old culture and amazing scenery. for now im going to have to stick with my much to be desired status.

I cant make a fair judgement as the State still pervades most aspects of Chinese life. I visited China a couple of years ago and didn't much like it. The authoritarianism of the place didn't help. I'd have to go back again once democracy is restored.

Wait a seccond. Before you go click me unhelpful, Let me speak. My fiance comes from China. The Chinese culture has taught him to be polite, courteous, and fair. It is not the citizen's fault they are under a dictatorship. Do not blame the Citizens. About Tibet....That is Jiamin's fault. He is the ruler. I have to give China five stars because of the history and the culture. It is truly beautiful. And I have met the greatest man in the world who is from there.

What am I rating here? Historically China is amazing some of Earths most ancient civilizations began there. Beautifull art and most everything we use is from there, invented or made. Politically China is a bit of a mess of course, they are ruled by Maoist dinosaurs. As a tourist destination I hear it all depends on where you go. China is just shy of the USA in land mass so as you can imagine it is fairly diverse.

China is a nice country to visit, it also supplys us with most plastic things such as mcDonalds toys baby toys and other things the country provideds you with many things you might be useing something that was made in china right now. China is a big industrial country. Yet it is so poor and crowded, and it's communist so that takes off a couple of stars pluse the food it isn't that good for goodnass sake the searve puppys!

China provided us with some great food, so that deserves one or two stars. But China is lousy about civil liberties, so I took off for that. China would probably be a nice place to live, even if it takes some getting used to, so that adds stars. But they can be a little hostile to outsiders, so I've got to take off for that. I feel sorta sympathetic for China because of how the USA turns their noses up at them for being a Communist country, so I'll add stars for that. But we are speaking of the country that gave us Mao Tse-tung, who may have had good intentions but let about ten zillion people from his country get killed, so I'll take off stars for that. But there is a limit to how many stars I can take off or add on, so I'll rate this somewhere in the middle. Take care, everyone!

China is disgusting to say the least. No offense to the Chinese citizens, but its Communist government is just sickening, and I don't think anyone should or could support its tourism, knowing of all the human rights violations that go on over there. The only reason they got the Olympics, is because of its enormous population which would generate lots of income to the official sponsors. All I can say is LET'S BOYCOTT OLYMPICS IN BEIJING 2008!!! Shame on you China!!!
